eating spahetti

Was anyone else disgusted when Susan Sarrandon ate spaghetti with her hands? Totally grossed me out.

reply

Okay.I hate Susan Sarandon.

But they did it to make him feel more comfortable because he couldn't manipulate a fork because of the ALD.

reply

That scene was beautiful.

Lorenzo ate with his hands since he lost his function on holding things, so he ate with his hands. His parents didn't want to make him feel weird or make him look odd, so they ate with their hands as well. no reason to hate susan sarandon cnmolitor.

reply

it was gross and many of my classmates laughed but i understand that same reason torres89013. i also feel lorenzo's pain. i had a speech impediment from 2-11 years of age. i am 26 now but still remember the feeling of others not understanding you...and you are reacting to the world and no one can get it.

at first i was like what the poo?!!? then i was all awwwww. this movie was so beautiful. i loved it.

reply

Lorenzo was not able to use the fork becuase it was hard to hold and probablly because his parents didn't want him hurting himself with it, whether it be accidental or purposly. He was having moments of being out of control.

reply

I can appreciate all of your theories on why they ate spaghetti that way, but keep in mind that back in the day, this is how true Italians ate it...with their hands. It's not like anyone else in the family couldn't pick up a fork, twirl some spagoots on it, and put it in Lorenzo's mouth. If that was the case, why didn't the rest of the family move around in wheelchairs, if they were so worried about hurting his feelings because he couldn't walk, or shave their heads when he lost his hair? C'mon now.

reply

Well then, why don't you shave your head and buy three other wheelchairs?

It's not funny that the entire family changed their ways to accomodate Lorenzo.

Garrett Hedlund laughing makes my day.

reply

This is stupid! I thought it was a wonderful scene. What's the big deal?

Did you actually watch the movie...that doesn't make any sense!

reply

Italians ate spaghetti with their hands???
And where did you see this? In some american movies or Italian movies like Toto's "Miseria e nobiltà"?
Please, that was a comical sequence (in "Miseria e nobiltà").

:-D
I'm always amazed by bright examples of ignorance like this.
As far as I know, no-one in Italy who can afford a fork would ever eat spaghetti with his hands. And wouldn't have had even a couple of centuries ago and more.

I think you are taking this too far. I completely understood the notion of them eating this way to make Lorenzo's degeneration easier on him. After all the dinner table ties the family together and it is a more important moment to express that the Odone's are willing to go through any trying times together as a family. Beautiful moment.

That's all well and good, except that has nothing to do with the movie.

Our son has problems with myelination (not yet completely diagnosed), and at almost four years old can hardly chew or move food around in his mouth. It's very difficult for him. Anything that any of us can do to make him eat we'll do!

reply

Really? Good lord. They did it so he wouldn't feel funny. Plain and simple.

I drank what?

reply

If you only knew of what the process comprises until it reaches your table as... delicious, hot, yummy tasty pastaaaa !

In reply to the Original Poster:

You obviously misunderstood the meaning of the scene of which you are describing. Lorenzo had lost the ability to feed himself using utensils; his family was only trying to make him feel comfortable feeding himself the only way he could: with his own hands. Despite the story of the film, which gives obvious context to the forementioned scene; I see no reason that eating spaghetti noodles with your hands would be seen as "disugsting."

It had nothing to do with the actors - many from Europe eat pasta (spaghetti) with their hands - it's a cultural difference, that's all...

It's unusual to see and takes getting used to, but, gross, no - perhaps they feel the same when they see Americans eat fried chicken with our hands...

One good example - recently, we received visitors from Hong Kong at the office, and, they politely stood by waiting for someone to invite them to have a snack, while many in the office just reached in with their hands, and took whatever food they wanted - now that was gross, and, very lacking in courtesy towards our guests...

reply

I'm gonna repeat myself.
Where exactly do we Europeans eat spaghetti with our hands?
Have you ever really come to Italy or generally Europe?

Nothing wrong with eating with your hands as long as you properly wash them. Having said this, you missed the point of the scene. They were eating with their hands so to comfort Lorenzo who also had to eat with his hands.
