I have to be bluntly honest...

First off, I have no children so I can not fathom what they went through or what I would do... I feel that keeping him alive like they did, when it was evident that he was in so much suffering, seems inhumane. I understand that they fought hard for research and answers but the suffering of that poor child in those younger years is gut wrenching to me and something doesn't seem right.

reply

Not trolling but I'm wondering what you thought they should do?

reply

Honestly. I don't know. It just seems like he was suffering so much for a very long time before they were able to develop the oil.. I guess its not an easy answer.

reply

Yeah. I first watched this movie when I was a child. It made me cry then. Now that I have a 7 y.o. child, it's even more gut wrenching. I don't know what I would do if my child was suffering the way Lorenzo did but I can't imagine not doing what ever I could to keep her alive. Maybe that's selfish? I'm pretty sure there was a sense of peace when he passed knowing that he was no longer in pain.

Yeah, but had they surrendered to fatality, how many kids would have died in the same condition? Their struggle to keep their son alive saved many other lives and that's the message shown in the ending credits.

well, early on in his progression of getting worse...there was a scene at the hospital where his mom told him it was ok to go..."fly away to jesus". but the kid fought through it and the parents took that as their kid wants to fight, so they had to fight for him too.

That's one way to look at it. Another way is that it's normal for the human body to fight to stay alive, whether the kid wanted to or not. It's practically impossible to fight reflexes. Even if the boy had prayed and prayed and wanted in the worst way to "fly away to Jesus," his body probably wouldn't let him. I think his parents did whatever they could do. Looking at it from the outside may give a clearer picture, but that doesn't mean the parents can "want" death, nor bring it about. What parent really could?

I drank what?

I'm sure it would be difficult to let him go. It's a parents instinct to fight for their child, so I understand why they didn't give up.

It's a question of whether to give up and when to let go. The human spirit's determination to discover truth is fortunately not easily quenched; consequently, in the case of Lorenzo Odone that determination led to a discovery which changed the world.
