the walk

spoilers:

when the kid walks at the end, religion? whats your opinion

well I think that since he had never gone to doctors or anything he probably had the abilty all along he just needed to believe that someone could fix him.

I watched this last night and I was thinking the same lines. That in time, Boyd had regained the ability to walk - if he had just tried, but he was so used to relying on the hardware, he didn't bother trying until he purposefully cast them off...

I also noticed, the Jonas didn't 'heal' him, but that Boyd just went to the Jesus figure for his 'healing' (touching the feet of Jesus).

old thread, I know, but I'm watching this right now...

Anyway, the kid DID go to doctors - his sister tells Jonas outside the diner that he had gone to doctors, been poked and prodded, stuck with needles a foot long, etc. They told him there was no hope. While it is possible since he had been to the doctors, he had regained strength, I'm gonna go with faith on this one.

Everyone's getting spanked but me!

Perhaps. He WAS exercising them.

okay first I acknowledge that I'm replying to a thread that is now 8 yrs old, lol.

My impression was the doctors hadn't said there was no hope - rather that there was no treatment because nothing was actually physically wrong with him. This condition is called hysterical or traumatic paralysis (I think we used to call it psychosomatic? basically, "it's all in your mind," lol.) His subconscious convinced his body to believe it could not walk, which blocked any conscious attempt to walk.

In real life this is a rare condition and is treated with therapy. In Hollywood this is usually "caused" by trauma survivor's guilt, and is "cured" by a sudden realization. Kind of like Dumbo and his magic feather, a movie patient just has to "believe."

The kid finally allowed himself to believe he was cured, and suddenly he got up and walked. It was not a true "miracle" according to the classic definition.

What are you talking about? They made it clear he did go to doctors and they couldn't help.

It was supposed to be a miracle, that's why Jonas and the girl were so freaked out.

Inside every cynical person is a disappointed idealist.

I have no idea, but it was obviously some kind of computer generated special effect. What makes it so impressive is that they were barely able to turn Arnold S. to liquid metal and back in those days. It was one of the most incredible special effects I've ever seen. How in the world did they do that?

I was amazed at that. I believe that God heals people today. I think that Jonas just needed to see what His power was really all about.

reply

You were amazed by a "miracle" in a movie!?! And no, He doesn't. He has given us science to heal.
