Unbelievably underrated movie.

My title says it all really. Terrific film. A shame Steve Martin seemed to be scared off from more serious roles because in this and Grand Canyon when he plays it straight he is amazing.

I strongly agree. A wonderful little movie. The cast is terrific. I really don't understand critics sometimes... I just seen it a couple of days ago in the tv and it is very engaging, Martin is awesome of course, Debra shines as usual and Neeson does a good job. Thumbs up!

I caught it on cable -- just a few minutes of it -- for the first time in a few years today.... I've always had mixed feelings about this movie because of the subject matter of faith period.

But where I jumped in -- Lucas Haas Character walking in front of everyone at the tent, Steve's reaction and everything that happened from there... It just reminded me this WAS a good movie.

Steve can act - I wish he was in more roles like this that are on the darker side... I think part of the reason this movie is rated lower is because it's Steve Martin and people expect a certain product from Steve and this was very different...

The flick is better than a 5.9. I totally agree with that...

I have felt so since I first saw it. Martin has been typecast as the stumbling buffoon for so long.. that when he appears in this people will get shocked away. I pair this with "A Simple Twist of Fate", another where Martin can play an edgy charater with a touch of fun at time.. and equally underrated

I saw this movie for the first time recently, and being a Steve Martin fan, the fact that I was not aware of the existence of this little gem, was really irritating. I must say I was impressed by this film, and particularly by Steve Martin himself, what a performance! In a perfect world, he would have a received an Oscar nomination. Oh well, screw awards, critics and all that crap, Leap of Faith is an underrated little film with what is arguably Martin's most powerful performance.

I caught the latter half of this on HBO a month or two back. I vaguely remembered watching some of it as a kid, so I says to myself "Self, let's check this out."

Wowee wow. You are all quite right, it is an extremely underrated film. Steve Martin is the obvious person to point to, as he turned in what I think of as one of his best performances. Really very magnetic (and fairly accurate as well, from what I have seen of Jonas' real-life counterparts).

Heck of a supporting cast, too. Liam Neeson, Debra Winger, Meat Loaf, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Delores Hall. Really now, it doesn't get much better.

plus one heckuva jumpin' soundtrack... you go, patti labelle!

A very decent movie. Hadn't seen it in years. Saw it was on HBO a few months back and TiVo and I liked it a lot. Very underrated film.

We should pull together to raise the rating!

But, on the other hand, we know what a good movie it is so we should just feel sorry for the people who don't get it.

I remember we tried to get our "Christian" (I use the term loosely) relatives to watch it but they were too offended. If they had watched it, they would have seen that the movie is all about faith and that God can use anybody. Oh well. It's their loss.

I always loved this movie,it was a film time forgot.

I loved this movie since the first time I saw it. In fact, I bought a couple of copies on videotape when it was first released and lent it to people that had never heard of it. Most of them loved it too. My theory is that the movie didn't bash religion or rednecks enough for the overwhelmingly left wing film critic's taste so they panned it.

Just watched this...and it is a great movie.

I suspect the low rating here on IMDB is due to those who are offended by the subject matter.

Great soundtrack, too!

Absolutely wonderful, with great performances by even the smaller roles. I only wish Steve Martin had made more movies where he put in performances like this. I agree the subject matter is probably what puts most people off - and they miss a great, great movie for it. Love the movie, love the soundtrack and even a curmudgeonly atheist like me gets a lift of the final scenes - as well as the singing.

It's a tender love song, very beautiful. {Whats it called?} Lick my love pump.

I agree that this movie deserves a higher rating :)

Im not a big Martin fan, but i do like his style once in a while.
When i saw this movie years ago, probably somewhere in de mid 90's, i remember it as a honest attempt at entertaining and even imo a fair contribution to believers.

Im not religious, actually sometimes when i read and hear things about religion (mostly the hypocrite stuff, suppressing women, child abuse) it pisses me off, and even those fake healers too.
But the fake healers do help people sometimes, so who am i to say that its wrong.
I support the thought behind religion as in knowing what is right and whats not, i dont support the man made rules and additions and distorted angles on how to make people believe what they think is right..
Damn why do i always put long stories on here :) hehe

I just wanted to say that i was shocked to see that it only got a 5,9!

Its a funny movie with heart, and Steve did a really good job here, its almost a one man show.
As some other posters said, he did have some stinky movies too, but that aside, this is one of those that are good, and still is.

Probably the subject is what "killed" this one, but think about the Singers in this movie, they dont seem like fake religious people, theyre called the Angels of Mercy if im right, im convinced that they would not participate on this movie if they thought (like probably a lot of other people) that this movie was made to ridicule those who believe.
Especially the ending makes clear, that even tho he was not a perfect human being, he did set off a chain reaction, which might be coincidence, but nevertheless successful in giving people real hope.

... sooooo
i suddenly stumbled upon this movie again a few days ago, and i watched it, and i liked it even more than the 1st time i saw it, im gonna give it a 10 :) and i hope i get it to a 6 rating.

Personally id give it a 6,5 (but that wont boost the overall rating much :) because its obviously a Hollywood movie, but still very entertaining and well made, its a feel good movie and certainly a good watch, Steve shouldve at least had been given an Oscar nod for this, because hes actually not overdoing or overselling his character, he is supposed to be hyper and energetic in this one...

ok im gonna stop typing now :) i always get carried away with this stuff!

EDIT:
Awwwww too bad :) my 10 wasnt the last push it needed to move over to the 6..
