Most versions remove a PIVOTAL part for Dot. SPOILERS: RE Dot and Marla

I am talking about the deleted scene of pregnant Marla being accidentally floored by Dot while making a base hit. Dot had no idea. This bit was deleted and most versions have:

them getting the news that George [Betty Spaghetti's husband] getting killed.

Then should have been the Marla/Dot game. but it is cut to...

Dot crying loudly in her room and in walks Dot's husband Bob.

This leaves us to think that Dot is being a bit selfish when I reality she was upset over possibly seriously damaging Marla. They also conveniently cut out the news of Marla being okay.

19. IN A CUT SCENE, WE SEE POST-MARRIAGE MARLA PLAYING WITH KIT ON THE RACINE BELLES.

She’s pregnant at the time and, although desperate to keep it secret from management, the players on both her team and the other teams agree to accommodate her. During the game, Dottie and Jimmy get into a fight about their relationship and she doesn’t notice Marla playing second base. On a double play ball, Dottie slides hard and takes out Marla who is removed on a stretcher. The other players accuse Dottie of stopping at nothing to win. Later, we learn that both Marla and the baby are fine but, in the original version of the movie, it is guilt over her actions that has Dottie in tears when Bob unexpectedly arrives.

so this lack of story leaves us to believe that dot was worrying about bob [yeah, she's valid] but at the same time not at all comforting Betty/the rest of the team for Betty's loss.

Oh God. Fortune vomits on my eiderdown once more.

Why would Marla be on an opposing team? She should be a part of Rockford unless they released her for her wedding but even then why wouldnt they take her back if she wanted to come back, like Dottie.

This scene deserved to be cut. It was a terrible scene for several reasons:

1. It's clumsy and contrived. As the earlier poster states, it makes no sense
that Marla would be playing for the other team. The idea that all the other players would be okay with having a pregnant woman risk getting hurt seems unlikely. And it just seems like such an awkward plot device to take Dotty down a peg for some reason, as if she needed to be.

2. Marla may have been naive, but she was no dummy and would never put herself at risk by playing ball when pregnant.

3. Dottie and Jimmy didn't have the kind of relationship depicted in the deleted scene; they both respected each other and to suggest that Dottie could potentially be another Of Jimmy's conquests, or that Dottie might act on any feelings for Jimmy and betray her husband, would only cheapen their friendship.

I'm not crying, you fool, I'm laughing!

I am glad that the scene was cut. It ruined the flow of the movie, especially since Marla specifically said she would be back NEXT season. Dottie crying in her room was a better scene. She had no idea if her relationship with her sister was permanently damaged, she just witnessed a teammate getting the most heartbreaking news ever, and she didn't know if HER husband would be coming home. It was emotional for her.
