Greatest Oscar snub in history ?

Literally got nominated for nothing but best cinematography.

Deserved nomination for best score , best supporting actor (Wes studi ) best original screenplay , best director and best picture for sure.

OK the stellar OST had copyright issues but all the other categories deserved a nom ...1992 wasn't such a competitive year ... there were lesser movies that got noms

reply

Unforgiven won that year which is fair enough, but it should have been nomianted for best picture, and won best soundtrack and cinematography at the very least.

reply

Oh, I really like "The Unforgiven", but I think that was politics, Last Of The Mohicans is the better movie, not by much, but LOTM is just much, much grander.

reply

I agree and like Unforgiven too!

Best Supporting Actor: Gene Hackman - Unforgiven
Screenplay - based on a book and credits the earlier film version - not sure what category that places it in.
Best Director: Clint Eastwood - Unforgiven
Best Picture: Unforgiven

I think this Last Of The Mohicans is excellent and I've watched it multiple time, it is surprising it only got the one nomination.

LOTM is one of my favorite movies. I think it captures that brief time in history when the American nation was primeval and raw and nature was fiercely a part of everyone's life - and had not been spoiled yet. It also portrays that spectacular nature of that part of the continent that just takes your breath away.

BUT, I have to say that LOTM is NOT a real acting movie. The plot is simple and basic. Maybe a different kind of acting in a physical or more animalistic way. Studi was really great as Magua a truly memorable character, as was the younger women whose name I cannot recall.

Best director I think, sure, definitely. The direction of that movie is so visceral and subliminal that you hardly notice it because it is so perfect. The soundtrack was also perfect.

I am not sure what it was up against in Best Picture, but LOTM surely deserved a nomination.

I agree with the OP. This is one of my all-time favorite movies. I bought the score as soon as I discovered it available on CD and listened to it religiously for awhile. It's definitely very stirring and there's also something cathartic about it.

I couldn’t agree more! That’s the Academy for you.

I couldn’t agree more with this! I caught this on tv last night and it’s still a fantastic film, so well made. It still looks so good even 30 years later. I can’t remember what the Oscar competition was in 1992 but this film should’ve swept it!
