My honest opinion about the movie (spoiler in here)

I thought it was awesome and hilarious. I have never seen so much violence in a movie ever. I enjoyed it a lot. I saw it on TV and i will probably buy the DVD.

I didn't really care about all the talking in it. Normally i have the patience to watch it all, i love westers for instance. I think it's funny that a movie like this with so much unrealistic and hilariously extreme violence tries to be serious in ceirtain points. Why did the good guy die at the end for example? That was totally, completely unnessecairy and it kinda ruined it for me. Yea, i'm one of those guys who wants either a happy ending, or the whole world destroyed at the end. Don't give me that sh*t where one of the two main characters dies and it ends with them all crying over it. Don't start talking about 'deep meaning' or 'Chinese culture' and sh*t like that either. This isn't the right movie for that sorta thing.

The Die Hard movies are perfect examples in how it should be done if it comes to this. Lots of action and killing, nothing more nothing less.

Don't get me wrong though, I think Hard Boiled is awesome.

What do you mean about the good guy dying at the en". Chow lives and Tony Leung's character is seen sailing off in search of peace.

reply

I thought his partner got shot and killed and the end... when the bad guy holds a gun to his head. You see a funeral the next scene and stuff. Did i miss something?

reply

Well? Answer me please.

Tony Leung's character lives, but they go through with faking his death, burn his files and whatnot, if I remember correctly. But the very end of the film shows Tony throwing his paper cranes in the water, the ones he made everytime he killed someone. I think the last shot is his boat sailing off.

NInjajoe is right. In fact, in the commentary on the criterion dvd, (I think) Woo mentions how Alan did in fact die in the original script, but they decided to let him live, feeling his death was too dark after everything that had come before. I think he mentions they actually filmed scenes for the alternate death ending, also. But, he also says how he feels they could have made the final ending more clear--a lot of people were apparently confused over it, even though he does in fact live. Like I said, I'm pretty sure Woo mentions all those things--but it's been awhile since I heard that commentary.

you know, i've never actually realized that.

i honestly thought tony tossing the paper cranes into the water and sailing off was just a metaphor for his dying at peace with himself. he redeemed himself as a cop and saved the day at the cost of his own life.

**SPOILER**

it's like at the end of The Killer, after jeff (Chow Yun-Fat's character) dies, they transition to jenny using his money to get the eye operation, and finally the movie fades out with jeff back on his windowsill playing the harmonica. they brought him back at the very end to show that he redeemed himself and now he can pass on in peace.

i dunno, both theories are pretty valid, and if john woo himself mentioned it in the dvd commentary, i'll gladly agree with the man.

Another thing to note, which others have mentioned before, is that Alan has bandages on when we last see him on his boat--suggesting he has sustained (and survived) recent injury. If it were a purely symbolic scene (showing that Alan is 'at peace' in death or whanot) he more than likely wouldn't have them.

I agree. John Woo takes his movies waaayyyy too seriously.

The action scenes are absolutely absurd, about as much as, say, a Michael Bay movie. However, the joking, playful nature of, say, The Rock makes the movie much more fun. To me, Hard Boiled was a joyless bloodbath. Sure, the opening shootout was cool and funny and stuff until you find out later that Woo is trying to play this like a straight action movie. After that, the shootouts get even more absurd, repetitive, and boring.
