Leonardo Di Caprio almost played Matthew/Martha

The 2 final choices were Jonathon Brandis and Leo. We went with Jonathon because of his deep voice. It played funnier when he posed as Martha. Leo played it with a high pitched voice when he did Martha, and he would have been way too pretty in the dress.

Much as I love Leo, & trust me I do...big Leo maniac here, I'm glad Jonathan got the role, may he rest in peace. He has the hottest voice I swear.

But there are similarties between Leo & Jonathan look wise, especially at that age(look at Leo in like...Growing Pains for example).

What are you talking about, I think Jonathan looked pretty in the dress and wig! :P

So Leo missed out on working with Vinessa Shaw twice. He was actually offered the part of Max in Hocus Pocus in which Shaw played the love interest, but he actually turned this one down in order to do What's Eating Gilbert Grape?

DiCaprio calls “This Boy’s Life” a seminal experience — he seemingly remembers everything about making the movie. But it was his next film that really solidified where he wanted to go as an actor. He was offered “more money than I ever dreamed of” to take a role in the Disney family film “Hocus Pocus.” But he decided he wanted to hold out for a small indie for which he hadn’t even auditioned yet, “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.”

“I don’t know where the hell I got the nerve,” he says now. “You live in an environment where you’re influenced by people telling you to make a lot of money and strike while the iron’s hot. But if there’s one thing I’m very proud of, it’s being a young man who was sticking to my guns.”

OMG, Jonathon's voice is my biggest complaint about the movie! First off, it sounds inauthentic--like he's consciously trying to make it sound deeper than it really is, which is annoying. Secondly it makes the movie more absurd than it already is because no one would ever be dumb enough to believe Martha was really female when she spoke with that voice. As if.
