what language is the guy speaking in the bar?

there's 2 scenes in the cabaret where there's this old guy talking in some language that is not Spanish.
it doesn't sound Portuguese either and its definitely not french.
my subtitles somehow has the translation...

anyone knows what it is?

Que idioma que el viejo tipo en el cabaret habla?
la pelicula tiene 2 scenes con ello y no lo es castellano, portugues, ingles o frances

Most of the poetry that Grandinetti's character recited during the movie was written by well known Uruguayan poet, Mario Benedetti.

The older gentleman in the bar was Benedetti himself, reciting his poetry in German.
