Why was he turned into a pig for starters? Did he become human after Fio kissed him?

The general opinion is that he more or less put the curse on himself, out of self-loathing, because he lived when all the other pilots died. His friendship with Fio is gradually curing him of this.
Have you seen Howl's Moving Castle? The witch's curse on Sophie works rather the same way - she doesn't look old when she's asleep, and looks less old when she's happy.
