Miyazaki's best?

Personally, I think this is Hayao Miyazaki's best work. I had seen all of his films up until I saw this one, and well I was blown away by it's flawless beauty.
Anyone else agree that this is his best work?

reply

Because of it's sheer originality, Spirited Away is just a litle better than this one imho. Either way, both are flawless.

reply

I would put this one slightly behind Spirited Away and Totoro, but it is a great film. Somehow, I get the feeling that this is probably Miyazaki's personal favorite.

reply

It's a lot different from the rest of his movies; it's set in a specific time period and place on Earth. I like it because of this blend with fantasy and reality. Plus, Porco Rosso's cool.

reply

For me it is and will always be Princess Mononoke.

reply

I've only seen My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away of Miyazaki's work. SA is my fave, and I liked Totoro. PM, although a good movie, didn't really interest me that much but that's probably because I'm a little picky about what I like to watch. But I'm contimplating buying Porco Rosso, I'm also looking at buying Kiki's Delivery Service and Grave of The Fireflies (that's not a Miyazaki film I know but I keep hearing great things about it).

reply

Just to warn you about Graveyard Of The Fireflies; you may want to keep a full box of tissues with you when you watch it. I have only seen it once and I cried my eyes out, and vowed never to watch it again. I do not ever want to experience that much pain and sadness again.

Don't get me wrong; it is a good movie. It powerfully portrays the pain and suffering that war causes, especially to the most innocent of all of us.

Yes, it sort caught me off guard like the Red Turtle. I worked in a videostore and only years later I discovered Japanese animation. I never thought animation could grab your soul like that.

Having only seen:
Castle in the Sky
Spirited Away
Princess Mononoke
Kiki's Delivery Service
Howl's Moving Castle
and Porco Rosso,
I've gotta say it's a toss up for me between Princess Mononoke and Howl's Moving Castle since Mononoke was sublime and breath-taking, and Howl's Moving Castle was an excellent movie version of the book that I love by Dianne Wynne Joans.

Porco was really good. I'm getting his movies from the library and watching them as I get the chance.

reply

I think Spirited Away is Miyazaki's best.

reply

I have a tough time choosing between Porco Rosso and My Neighbor Totoro only because the two movies are just so different. It's like comparing apples and oranges, so I just say they're both his best :D

"The deal was ten thousand dollars, not ten thousand dollars and a briefcase."

reply

I love this, but Future Boy Conan (Miyazaki's 1978 TV series) is his absolute best, followed by Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Nausicaa, and Totoro. My favorite Ghibli films are Only Yesterday, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, I Can Hear the Sea, and Kiriku to Majo (the Takahata-supervised Japanese dub of a French animated film by Michel Ocelot that is distributed by Ghibli in Japan -- more info here: http://club.buenavista.jp/ghibli_eng/product_423.jsp).

reply

I think it's his best work. He was really at the height of his powers when he made it.

reply

All Miyazakis movies are great! Cant choose a favourite.

reply

It's been said over and aver here that Spirited Away is Miyazaki's masterpiece, and although this is undoubtably true, I'm a Totoro man!

Heh heh, I'm a 6 year old trapped in a 35 year old's body!

reply

It is not his best movie but definitely his most underrated work.

my personal ranking is:

1. Castle of Cagliostro
2. Laputa - Castle in the sky
3. Nausicaa of the valley of the wind
4. Porco Rosso
5. Princess Mononoke

reply

the order of my top 5 is

1. Porco Rosso
2. Spirited Away
3. Whisper of the Heart - The first three i really love equally.
4. Princess Mononoke
5. My Neighbour Totoro

reply

I agree with you, Porco Rosso is his best film

reply

Why? I'd rank it as his worst that I've seen. Do you mean from a technical standpoint only??

Kiki's Delivery Service is my favourite Miyazaki movie. Porco Rosso is an amazing movie too and I can see why a lot of people wouldn't favour it as much as the others he's done, but it's a movie with a simple plot, and a lot of charm.

The best Studio Ghibli movie on the other hand, is Grave of the Fireflies. One of my favourite movies, of all time<3

reply

Definitely my very least favorite, too! Rock bottom. 'Spirited Away' is among the top of my list of enjoyable Miyazaki movies. I'm sooooo looking forward to 'Gedo Senki' (Tales from the Earthsea)!

reply

i can't believe that NO ONE has mentioned Kiki's Delivery Service... I love every single Miyazaki movie.. i mean love.. i dont think i can pick a favorite.. but Kiki's is pure magic..I dont know why but it just puts ya in the most relaxed and awesome mood. if you haven't seen it, its one of his best.

My fave Ghibli films in order:

3. Spirited Away
4. Princess Mononoke
5. Castle of Cagliostro
and etc etc

Although I loved Mononoke and others PR is definately my absolute favourite.

"Life, it's like a song. it's so beautiful when you live it,but it's going to end sooner or later."

reply

I'm actually not a huge fan of Miyazaki, but I love this film.

reply

Porco Rosso is the first self-reflexive, nostalgic, and enigmatic "cartoon" that I've ever seen. It's easily more complex than the majority of his other work, especially the fantastic ending, which may be the best writing that I've witnessed in an animated film. It is not only my favorite Miyazaki film; it's my favorite animated film, period.

reply

A lot of people don't like Porco Rosso because it's not fantasy.
