I found on another website that they were only sentenced to 2nd degree murder for 15 years! This means they were released in 2004! I can't believe that they got off so easily after what they did to poor Missy.

reply

Actually I believe they got 15-life, so they probably won't be out for a while. They have both been denied parole thus far.

According to Wikipedia, Karen Severson was released from prison on December 9, 2011 after serving 21 years. Laura Doyle was released from prison in December 2012 after serving 22 years.

We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will.

reply

They've released them? oh my goodness! since people usually come out of jail worse than when they went in, I can only imagine what type of people they are now! People that have committed murder before they are even of age can not possibly be rehabilitatable. Sociopaths should always be jailed for life.

This story sounds so much like an event that happened in my hometown a few years ago- a girl named Reena Virk was killed by a girl that went to school with her, named Kelly Ellard, and Kelly lured her down under a bridge here and almost beat her to death, but killed her by holding her underwater. She did this because she thought that Reena was fooling around with her boyfriend. Turns out she wasn't. I saw her parents taking a walk almost a year ago near my house, and a couple of months ago I saw her dad in a Save-On-Foods. Sad.

reply

IIRC,they had beating #1 at a party and took her to the bridge for beating #2,and it was the injuries from the second beating that actually killed her. That was a major case of bullying that made me determined to tell my kids that if ANYONE so much as breathes on them wrong, they not only have my permission to crush their brains into a fine pink mist-they have my orders.

reply

Sorry.Correction-both beatings happened at the bridge.

Reminds me of the case of "Shanda Sharer" she was murdered by her "Friends" in 1992 in Indiana, because she had been involved in a love triangle with some other girls
http://www.geocities.com/shandasharerwebsite/shandamurderers.html
In 1991, Shanda started attending Hazelwood Jr. High where she formed a lesbian relationship with 14-year-old Amanda Heavrin. At that time, Heavrin was also dating 16-year-old Melinda Loveless. Loveless was infuriated when she found out about the relationship and vowed to make Sharer pay.
As you can see from the website, One of the Murderers, Toni Lawrence, was released in 2000, only serving 8 yrs Hope Rippey was released in 2006, the other 2 perpertators have a 60 yr jail term

reply

Just out of curiosity, why was there such a huge difference in the sentences?

reply

pepole can be so stupid killing a girl over a mis understanding thing. I mean the girls thoght she was messing around with the boyfriend and killed her over that. I mean what they could have did was just ask "Why were you with my boyfriend" (For example) i mean. I hope that young women will learn who to trust becasue the way i see the world these days it's like heading to the dark side.

Yes, teaching your kids to resort to violence any time someone does something they don't like is a great way to combat bullying. Do you also organize orgies in the name of celibacy?

When you're 17 a cow can seem dangerous and forbidden...am I alone here?

reply

I think that the difference in the sentencing for the Shandi case were that two of the 4 girls involved actually did the killing, while the other two drove the getaway car and were the ones to coax Shandi with them.

reply

Are the killers still in jail?

reply

They got just 15 years, so I don't think so.

EDIT: Karen Severson was released from prison on December 9, 2011, after serving 23.5 years. Laura Doyle was released from prison in December 2012 after serving 22 years.

reply

Are there are any books about this case? I have yet to find one.

reply

Yes there is. They changed all the names for the movie. The book is called "Missy's Murder".

reply

did ellen/karen really have a daughter?

reply

don't know if she really had a daughter but she is still in jail, parole denied, she has mutiple sclerosis and is a model prisoner, but that doesn't change the horrific thing she did.

did some digging, she really had a daughter, named stephanie

reply

Yes Karen did have a baby.
