I don't understand Kate...

... saying she didn't know why Spencer was tormented and why he drank so much. How about being in love with one woman when you're married to another! He was a Catholic and this was very much against his beliefs. Times were very different then and infidelity was considered a serious character flaw. If it became public knowledge, it could ruin his career and his ability to provide for his family. Plus he had a deaf son which added complications. Kate admitted that Spencer knew how important his wife's charity work with the deaf community and the clinic were. And that she NEEDED to be Mrs Spencer Tracy for the clinic to receive the support and attention it needed.
So for her to say she never understood why he was tormented... I just can't understand! She's an intelligent woman. Was it complete denial? Was it a refusal on her part to admit that she played a role in his torment. Is it the height of hubris and conceit to think that there's no possible way that her own actions and decisions in deciding to have a 27 year affair with a married man may have led to his torment?!
Don't get me wrong. I'm a great fan of Kate's work and talent. But I find her self proclaimed naivety on what tormented the man she loved and had an affair with for 27 years absurd and completely unbelievable.

How did you come to that conclusion? If anything, she did the opposite. Why else do you think she stuck by him?
Besides, Spencer had numerous affairs with other actresses even whilst with Kate. Let's not act like he was some kind of victim.
