SPOILER: Why was Geraldine arrested?
At one point Geraldine is driving home, is pulled over by police and when they discover she's a he, they take him to the station. Is it illegal in the UK to cross dress? Otherwise why was he arrested?

The police stopped the car because Geraldine was speeding. When the policeman discovered that he'd been sexually attracted to a man in a dress he would have been enraged, so any charge would have been brought to take Geraldine into custody and humiliate 'her'. I think the laws have changed, but at that time I would expect a public order charge of indecency or 'behaviour likely to cause a breach of the peace' (or words to that effect).
Thats why I like commentary tracks on DVDs, they sometimes explain the motivation behind certain scenes in a movie.
