The 90's came with all these hood movies.

I was just thinking about this the 90's was a good time for hood and gangsta movies like:

Poetic Justice
Jason Lyrics
Set It Off
Boomerang
Panther
Juice

Too bad todays "hood movies" are just straight to DVD garbage! What happened to quality "black" movies and TV shows! All we get now is Tyler Perry's this and Tyler Perry's that. Don't get me wrong his movies were ok at first, but they are beyond tired now. And his TV shows, although funny at times, have this whole "cheap" quality to them. What happened to the Fresh Princes and the Martins of yesteryear? I miss the 90's!

Poetic Justice was straight up depressing (more romance than "hood") but I think you missed a few big ones...

Boyz n the Hood
Menace II Society

Top two 90s hood movies for sure.

The new decade hasn't spawned as much--Baby Boy was OK.
I think when "rappers" started making hood movies, it became crap. State Property is the worst, Belly, etc. al....

Since when is Boomerang a hood movie?

reply

"Belly" was a mess, for real..."Paid in Full" was a good piece...

THE REASON the 90's was such a great time for hood movies was because it was an unexplored territory, It really opened the eyes of alot of people about "what was really going on in the 'hood" ...but like all things..eventually the topic gets old and stale. It got to the point where the waynes bros made a parody film about hood movies...

reply

Baby Boy was good, I like that movie a lot.

Any of you remember that movie White Boyz?

Whiteboyz was good. Very under-seen. Great in so many ways, and a lot of those actors have gotten pretty big lately, unfortunately not the guy who played Flip and wrote it, Danny Hoch.

Sounds like you're saying that all hood movies are terrible, and all movies that aren't hood movies are not terrible. Sweet!

'Boomerang' was a gangsta/hood movie? 'Boomerang'? Really?

I don't think it has been mentioned yet but Above The Rim deserves to be acknowledged in this conversation.

reply

Not that it's particularly hood or gangsta, but The Wood is one of my favourite "black" movies. And no mention of Colors with Sean Penn?

I think hood movies sort of died out because a lot of black people had no interest in watching negative portrayals of their own people... Like yeah, you're making us the main characters in movies, but we're thugs, pimps, and gangsters.

Even the "hero" in a lot of these movies is hood/gangsta themself, so it's hard to sympathize with them a bit knowing that they've wronged people themselves.

I also think a lot of the positive messages are lost on the target audience as well... In Boyz n' Tha Hood for instance, did kids walk away with the idea that gangs are bad, or did they walk away thinking Ice Cube was the baddest mofo in the world?

I think there's a lot of context lost on the younger audience, and if there's no one to guide them and discuss what they've watched a lot of these movies could do more harm than good to an impressionable youth.
