Why do people hate this movie so?

I enjoy this movie a fair bit, it's one of the better samurai films I've seen that wasn't done by Kurosawa. But people rip it to shreds everywhere I've seen. The rating is undeservedly low on IMDB, I think, the review I just read was pretty unpleasantly biased against it. I just don't get it. The fight scenes are good, the story isn't as bad as some of the testicles Hollywood's churning out these days.

What gives? :(
