U.S. Army

In the country drug deal shootout there are tons of ammo crates with "U.S. ARMY"(poorly)stenciled on. I'm curious why this was done. FTR, this is not a loaded question. I have no political beef or bone to pick, I'm just curious why this was in the film. It seemed like a deliberate decision to make it clear the weapons are from the US, especially since the lettering is oversized as to be clearly visible. Is it a reference to an earlier police story plot I have forgotten, or maybe the Iran-Contra affair, or....?
