Some things about this movie

This film is Spanish, not Mexican like someone said in a comment.
"Tragicomedia" is a very tipycal Spanish genre (the first ever was a classic theater play "La Celestina")
There's a scene where two guys are naked bullfighting by night beacuse that´s what a famous bullfigther (Manolete) said he did once when he was young and many bullfighters have done it.
This is also a very surrealistic movie and the last scene is a homage to Buñuel.

Didn't they reference that particular bullfighter? at least i thought they did- its been awhile since i've seen the movie

Didn't understand your message.....

It was a reference to your puzzling sig: "nobody notices..." etc.

I didn't realise it was a sig at first (it was tagged on to your comment with no linebreak). Besides, over where I am, we're not bombarded with "drunk Indian" stereotypes you see. We Irish were branded the same, but finally that stereotype seems to be breaking down.

From where does the quote originate?

Its from Sherman Alexie's Reservation Blues

Finally a Spaniard (you are Spanish, right?) who likes this movie has posted on these boards! I was saying in another post that the vast majority of Spanish people I know actually HATE this film (so many of them have told me that they hate it, but I'm sure most of them haven't even watched it - they probably go along with the general view that it's in bad taste). They typically say something like "Spain isn't like that!", which is pretty obvious because the film is a parody, but many insist that it fails even as a parody. I usually tried to annoy them by saying that it wasn't a parody on machismo, or other elements of Spanish culture, but that it was EXACTLY how I found Spain when I was there. That went down well. lol. It's like saying that "The Quiet Man" or "Into the West" is exactly like Irish everyday life!

I enjoyed the movie, and couldn't really see why it was so offensive to so many Spanish people. I thought the acting was pretty good, especially Bardem's performance. It was very stylishly directed and is one of the few Spanish films to achieve considerable international critical acclaim. I loved the way it parodied the overly-melodramatic and absurdly tragic climaxes to many bad Spanish films (so many promising Spanish films have been spoiled for me by over the top endings). It had the most absurd ending to any film I have ever seen. Brilliant and hilarious. Maybe we could have a Columbian tragedy where the key protagonists fight over the girl with giant bananas - what do you think?

I'm Spaniard and I didn't like the film either, except some (not all) sex scenes with Penélope Cruz, of course. It's a gross film.

I am also a Spaniard and I loved the movie! It is a very well considered movie, director and actors in Spain!

I also have to say: we DO love garlic on food, and we are crazy about a good Jamón! hehe

Enjoy this briliant "tragicomedia"!!

This movie is absoloutely hysterical, stupid funny and just so over the top is brilliant!!! this movie is like the eurotrips and american pie's of the USA....only a lot older and in spanish, but the whole sexual and cultural parodies remain the main ingredients. I recomend it!

I am not a Spaniard and I very much liked it, but I must say my favorite Spanish films are the charming comedy "Belle Epoque" and "Abre Los Ojos" which also are two of my all time very favorite films.
