Theres One Time I Actually Like Joseph

Right before Michael goes on stage he wipes his tears away, tells him to go get him, and after Michael starts to sing he and Joseph share a smile. The one and only time I actually like the scum bag.

I think a lot of people make Joe out to be this big monster is because if he raised his kids the same way he did back in the 50s & 60s, chances are he would be in jail right now. Some people would say 'Throw Katherine in jail as well. She stood by and did nothing to stop him, so she's just as bad as Joe is.'

But even if kids would get spanked by their parents back in the 50s and 60s, I think Joseph Jackson was unusually violent even for the time period. It's just that no one cared much about child abuse back then, so he could get away with it. I mean, only in this movie, he beat Tito to a pulp for destroying a guitar string, he beat Marlon almost as badly because he missed a dance step, and he almost strangled Rebbie for almost no reason at all.

And it's not just him being physically violent towards the kids. It's also how he would control their entire lives. They weren't allowed to hang out with friends or have other interests than music. They were hardly allowed to do their homeworks, because they were supposed to practice music after school. The younger boys weren't allowed to play games, the older boys weren't allowed to have girlfriends.

The reason he almost strangled Rebbie was because when she and Katherine moved furniture around the house, Joe got mad at that & she voiced her opinion saying their mom is the main woman of the house and she had every right to move things around. Joe thought she was talking back to him & said she was messing around with neighborhood boys. That's why he nearly choked her.

I agree. In my last post, I said he almost strangled for "almost no reason at all". But really, I should have said "no reason at all". Rebbie was right, that Katherine was the woman of the house and had the right to move the furniture. And even if she had been a slut, that wouldn't have given him the right to do it either.

I think people just don't understand what life was like 50+ years ago- it's not anything like today- the man rules it all- so what she was the "woman of the house" she still has to answer to the man of the house...

Joseph grew up in hard times- you think black people were treated well in that age? He was hard on his kids cuz he had a hard life- I don't condone his actions but he knew no other way I believe.

I do think he loved his kids- if he didn't he wouldn't have pushed them so hard and let them live their lives working in the steel mill and doing whatever else- without their dad their would be no Jackson 5 for sure.

But I still think Joseph was bad even for the time period. Sure there were problems, but him abusing his kids didn't make anything better. They could still have made it without him being the way he was.

Moronic idiots thought he hated his children. Not true. He loved them and was a strict disciplinarian. Not like some of these weak ass fathers of today. Sure, he could have slowed down the spankings, but that was all he knew. He is not a scum bag. I bet the ones attacking him are stupid, young kids who know nothing about self control and respect.

It's easy to judge Joseph simply as harsh if you don't imagine his reasons for being hard on his kids. Sure, I think he could've probably been a little more gentle. I just know that I heard he went to work shoeless. SHOELESS.
I myself have NEVER (even though I'm just nineteen) HAD to go anywhere SHOELESS.
I have NEVER had to go to work sharing a co-workers meal because I didn't have the money to buy my own food.
I am NOT going to sit here and judge a person who has struggled to so much more extremes than myself.
I can't imagine how strict I'd be with my own children. I wouldn't want my children growing up with that struggling type of life-style probably either!
YES, Joseph was very aggressive. No, I don't see his force as necessarily right. One thing I do see is that he had to have loved his children. He was hard on them because he didn't want life to be hard on them like it was with himself!
And yes, I've been hurt beat by my own mother. Not for the same reason the Jackson kids have, but my mother loves me and wanted to protect me then, just like Joseph loved his kids and wanted to protect them in their childhood. The best way he saw it.

I agree with your post Em, you said it better than I could. No one is saying the Joe was on the right w/ how he treated his family, but I do believe he loved them nonetheless. It's hard for us, for those who grew up in this time & age, non-Black & w/ a comfort this family didn't have back then to look back & judge a person unsparingly w/ a very narrow POV. Life must've been more than difficult for someone like Joe Jackson, especially for parents who saw little to no opportunity for a growing family. If you were in their shoes, wouldn't you do anything, ANYTHING to make sure your kids get out of the hellhole you're in? To make sure that no matter what, your kids will have a better future than where you are now? Suffering, struggling to make ends meat in a dead end job? That sort of desperation will drive a person to do anything, especially if it was for their family, their kids, their own flesh & blood, instead of leaving the kids to end up in jail, dead or murdered in a crime capital like Gary, Indiana.

Has there ever been a worse stage father than Joe Jackson? Murry Wilson was a real douche bag. He was the father of The Beach Boys members Brian Wilson, Dennis Wilson, and Carl Wilson, uncle of bandmate Mike Love and was manager and music publisher for their band.
