Tito and Deedee got married after high school?

I know that in real life Tito and Deedee were a year and a half apart, but I don't understnad how they both got married right out of high school if he was older? I guess I mean, why was she out of high school if she had just turned 17? Also, why did her parents let her get married at only 17? She wasn't pregnant. They didn't have the first son until over a year after they were married. I had heard that they wanted to get married before Tito went on a world tour, but he eventually would have been back so there was really no point.

You have to remember the Jackson's came about in the early 60s, it's not like today- many people DID get married right out of high school because life was different than. A high school education was enough to get you a good job and get married and have a family- not like today. And to top it all off Tito was going to be huge- why not allow your daughter to marry him?

reply

But I wonder why Katherine said she was shocked about it?

reply

I think Katherine was shocked because Tito and DeeDee were so young when they got married. Of course, Joe didn't like it. To him, it was one less child he had total control over. He already lost it on Rebbie, now he had to do it again.

I wonder if they thought an interracial marriage would be a problem in those days?

reply

It wouldn't surprise me if it was a problem back then since DeeDee wasn't Black.

reply

Ere they still in Indiana at that time or in Cali? Cause I heard that in the west, it wasn't that bad. People would give weird looks but would tolerate.

reply

By this time they were in California.

reply

By the time Tito & DeeDee got married, the Supreme Court ruled interracial marriages were legal in most states. I think California was one of those states who said it was OK for people of different races to marry.

reply

Everyone seemed happier about Jermaine and Hazel gettibng married than with Tito and Deedee.

reply

I think part of that is because of two things:

- Jermaine married a Black woman whereas Tito married a Hispanic woman
- Hazel was Berry Gordy's daughter

reply

I wonder if it was strange for the family having Tito marry a woman who was another race?

reply

That is a good question. I don't think it was. What about the other brothers did they all have black women? I know Hazel was black, but after Jermaine divorced her all he seemed to date was different race of women. Jackie I think his wife (she passed back in 1996 I belive) I think she was black, Marlon I'm not sur if his wife is black or not, and Randy I think his wife was of mixed race.

reply

You do know that Deedee was mixed right? Same with Hazel
So are you claiming that perhaps The Jacksons were racist against anyone brown skinned ... if so then guess that explains why Janet kept her two marriages secret and how M.J was too willing to put it out there that his women were white.

Would Jermaine have ever married a hispanic woman?

Tito Jackson and Dee Dee Martes divorced in 1993. In 1994 Martes was found dead floating in a swimming pool. The death was originally ruled accidental, however a Los Angeles business man, Donald Bohana, was subsequently charged with murdering her and later found guilty of second degree murder in 2000.
