'cuse me! I was just spelling it as it sounded.

At least 4 different horses played Tir na nOg during filming.

Tony Smart provided the horses for this film. I can try to find out which horses he used for Tir Na N'Og if you still want to know?

reply

there were 5 different horses, not all of the same sex

Do you know if it was a 'gaited' horse? I noticed when it was walking fast, viewed from the front, that it seemed to have a Paso Fino type way of swinging it's front legs out to the side.

I would say that the "main" horse was definitely an Andalusian. A lot of them have the "winging" motion in their trot with a lot of knee action. And his conformation was totally Andy. (big crest, sub-convex head, low tail set, short back, LOTS of mane and tail) I never saw the horse display any paso type gaits in the film, though. Paso's do look somewhat similar to Andy's, though, which would make sense since Spanish horses were used to establish the breed.

I don't think the horse used in the jumping scenes was an Andalusian, though.. Though some do have a talent for jumping, I've never seen one have the ability for grand prix type ability. (Not that I've seen every single one on the planet :) ) I would guess some sort of warmblood or thoroughbred...

Gorgeous animal, though. I have an Andalusian and I adore the breed.

Still interested in who/what breed the horses were, if you could check.

I thought the main horse was Arabian -- the black muzzled horse. Another person said the main horse was Andalusian, but aren't they half Arabian?

Whatever breed it is, I want one!

Tir na nOg, it means the Land of Eternal Youth, no idea who played him, possibly could have been several different horses. In Xena Argo was played by several horses, the main one being a mare called Tilly, they also used male horses = in some eps Argo was visibly male, in other eps not

Probably the same for Tir nOg, I heard The Black Stallion from the TV show a few years back was played by three different nags

The horses used in the movie were Lipizzans. Their looks, temperament, athleticism are all trademarks of the breed. It's also listed under a few official breed association websites.
