its actualy got alot better. my family used to visit my cousin out there circa 93 - 95, and it was dodgey as hell. and thats not a racist or ignorant comment, because anyone who knows dublin knows its true. however, i did go back about a year ago to attend an arts play type thing my mate was directing that was in an actual apt in one of the towers. about two or three were already torn down, and the area is looking much better already. we parked our car in a carpark by one of the towers , where it was fully intact by the time we came back, whereas we wouldnt have done that years ago!!! so yeah for the ballymun regeneration project and more power to them!!!

Anybody knows if those were used while filming the commitments? There's one scene in the commitments where it looks like those, and there's actually a sequence where a young boy enters a lift with his horse.

Yes, indeed! My father-in-law was a shop steward of the Seven Towers, a fact he detested because he believed no one should have to live in such wretched buildings--that people shouldn't have to sell their souls for an indoor loo. And he was so right! At the time of construction, there was still plenty, of good, cheap land for cottages, semi-d's, and row houses--all with gardens and a dry shed for turf, logs, coal. The government had to a few thousand poor out of the city centre--those so-called gurriers were such an embarassment, and Ireland was "going places! The gov't also wanted to "settle" as many Tinker's as possible for reasons that are to complex to deal with here--besides, many of those reasons are in the film.

The towers are gone now, and while their are lovely homes available, you won't find more than a handful of the former residents of the Towers living in them since they were built for profit. The undesirables, the poor, the infirm, and the elderly have been relocated "elsewhere", and the "undesirables" who were sent to places like Limerick, Listowel, Bantry, etc., have created literal warzones wherever they land. And by the way, there are still plenty of people--mostly single mothers--who live in such Dickensian squalor that our entire nation should be ashamed to call itself "developed". Obviously, unethical bankers are far more important to Ireland's future than her children are.

ktruane: you touch upon a good deal of problems, which I believe exist in most countries. It is a tragedy, as you say, that what is considered developed countries treat their population like this. Even here in Norway, a country on the top of the lists of richest countries in the world, deal with these problems to a large extent.

Can I ask where that's coming from? I know no one who lived in a flat who got relocated "elsewhere" unless they fought hard for a transfer out. The Regeneration council assured us that those of the tenants who had severe "anti-social" issues would be placed elsewhere and a strict code against anti-social behaviour would be put in place to make Ballymun not only a safe place to live but more desirable a location. Bull crap! Nothing was done against them and they were given houses like the rest of the residents of the flats.
