vampire movies study

Hi everyone

I’m doing some research about vampire movies from the the 90’s until now.
I’m really focusing on American cinema but I can look further ( NightWatch for instance).

If you’re willing to help me I’d like to know what is (among the movies that came out during this time) your favourite vampire movie.

Just tell me :
which one is your favourite vampire movie and why do you like it so much, comparing to other vampire movies.

Any reason is interesting to me (visual style, plot, violence, soundtrack, characters, visual effects…)

I’d really appreciate if you could tell me your age too just to make some statistics according to the tastes of everyone. I will not judge you.

I’m French by the way so please forgive me if my writing is not correct.

Thanks

My favourite vampire movie is probably "From Dusk 'Til Dawn" (as well as its sequels).

I really enjoyed it because it's hilarious and downright silly. Of course, there is some suspense and action, and it's very gory. The characters also helped sell the film for me. Quentin Tarantino and Harvey Keitel's characters were awesome.

Furthermore, I'm a huge fan of Robert Rodriguez and his films, so there may be some bias there.

Compared to other vampire films, it is less of a horror film and more of an action/comedy, and is very fast paced and quirky. If I had to compare it to any other vampire film, I would say "John Carpenter's Vampires" (Even though it came out later), since they're both action/comedies and are B-Movies.

Besides the FDTD series, I am NOT a huge vampire fan, but I have seen "Innocent Blood" (Which is why I'm here), as well as the original "Dracula", "Bram Stroker's Dracula" (1992), "John Carpenter's Vampires", and "Lost Boys".

I am 19 years old, (In college) but I was 16 when I first saw the movie, and I am a guy.

I'm sure you don't care anymore but I'll answer anyway:

- Near Dark is my favourite. I used to think the ending was a letdown but (I'm going to avoid spoilers here) now I think it's a clever bit of storytelling...in the context of this movie, the "unlikely miracle" (you'll know what I mean if you see it) in the third act, for this movie, serves a nice purpose in illustrating that the villains choose to be what they are, rather than are "afflicted" like so many other cinematic vamps.

- Fright Night. My second fav, a funny and thrilling vampire tale...music is very dated (well, the score's still OK but the pop songs are bad), but the writing and direction are top notch and the actors, old and young, work together nicely. Clearly the film takes a cue from Dan O'Bannon's Return of the Living Dead in putting more than one generation of cast together in lead roles (three I think). Sequel is pretty good too, but not quite up to snuff.

- From Dusk Till Dawn. Ultimately it plays out more like a zombie film but still entertaining as all hell. Part 3 is one of the best direct to video films I've ever seen, but Part 2 is hideous.

- John Carpenter's Vampires....I hated this at first, but now I love it. One of Carp's classic scores, a brilliant performance by James Woods as a classic John Carpenter antihero and a nice punchy script. Without such a gothic look and performance with the lead vampire, and removal of the Baldwin, it would be higher on this list.

- The Monster Squad was a childhood favourite.

Campier, old vampire films would be Last Man on Earth, Count Yorga and The Return of Count Yorga (both recommended), Blacula (much, much better than you'd expect) and to a lesser extent the second one (not so good). The Tod Browning original Dracula is a winner, and some of the Hammer ones too (do your homework). I also love an old episode of Tales From the Crypt called..."Comes the Dawn" (it might be "Came the Dawn"...both are titles of crypt episodes...) about poachers in Alaska with vampires all around. It was their best vampire episode, though "Werewolf Concerto" was good too (I've spoiled the twist). Avoid the movie "BORDELLO OF BLOOD" and the episode "Reluctant Vampire" though.

Vampire films I hate? Dracula 2000, Dracula 3000, Dracula 2, Dracula 3, Bram Stoker's Dracula (Keanu Reeves performance is AWFUL! JUST AWFUL!), Twilight, Blade, The Lost Boys etc etc.

Oh! And "The Night Flier" is a great vampire film too, a Stephen King adaptation that went straight to video but don't let that stop you...great writing and acting! only letdown the climactic special effects (which the suprise of is ruined by the video/dvd cover...)

and King's SALEM'S LOT was made into a great 1979 miniseries too. Tobe "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" directed it and did a great job. It's dated, of course, and David Soul's level best William Shatner impression does nothing to improve proceedings but it will actually SCARE YOU! not just BOO moments, but eerieness too! See this BEFORE Fright Night to see what some of that film is sending up with it's "fearless vampire killer" stuff at the end!

Vamp was quite fun actually. See that. Avoid "the Addiction" pretentious waste of space that it was.

More unconventional vamp films I like....Lifeforce, Phantasm, Def by Temptation, Sucker: The Vampire and Martin!

My favorite vampire movies are Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the Blade films.

From Dusk Till Dawn probably is the best vampire film from that period in my view. Overall I just think it flows the best, it has a good dose of comedy and action along with a fairly interesting story. However my favorite vampire film of all time is definitely an older film, Roman Polanski's The Fearless Vampire Killers from 1967.

My body's a cage, it's been used and abused...and I...LIKE IT!!

My favorite vampire films are Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Blade films starring Wesley Snipes and the From Dusk Till Dawn films. The vampires are the villains of the From Dusk Till Dawn films with George Clooney playing the anti-hero. His character is a professional thief. Maybe the characters known as the Gecko brothers in the From Dusk Till Dawn films Marie would feed on along with Cheech Marin's character from the end of FDTD. Maybe George Clooney's character would end up killing Marie.

If I had to pick three they would be; 'Lost Boys'. Set in the modern day, it's probably not favoured by the critics or Vampire die-hards, but I think it's a fabulous film and has the most grotesque vampires I've seen.
Another classic is the all-star cast 'Interview with a vampire' which is a more serious attempt at the genre set in the gothic period. It's a slow burner but full of classic scenes and creepiness.
My final choice is 'Salem's Lot' a Stephen King penned story which is brilliantly portrayed and performed.
Yes they're all American pictures, but I haven't seen any foreign ones and all the British films are weak efforts I feel, mostly coming from the 'Hammer' cannon.
