Baptiste the prisoner, camille the commie, and eliane the mother. Or grandmother, depending on how you look at it.

Springheeljack, it seems pretty clear that the writer you are responding to is letting his political views warp his post - apparantly only people who share his political views are capable of human emotion.

BTW, I like your name, Jack - read a story when I was a young 'un about 'ol Jack. Quite a character.

You should see the movie. It´s not the same, someone telling you the end or watching it. You will enjoy watching it a lot more.

Why wouldn't she return? being a cummunist?
But she refused her past, her love...bcause of being a cummunist? i don't think so. Bcause the sorrow was too much to bear? so why?
And why "I don't want him to know what I've lived through, how I suffered". She refused it at all? or not? I can't understand that.
I can't stop thinking about it. Any help?

camille decided to come back, because she wanted to fight for independence for her country. etienne and camille's mom continuing talking. madame was just telling etienne about wat happened to his mother camille. so they are just walking along a lake, just talking
etienne tells her that he looks at HER as a mother, not camille.
and madame lies to etienne and said that she broke her heel.
and walks to the side. shes trying to advoid etienne from seeing her crying.
she was crying, because nobody has ever said that to her before.
nobody ever said, "you are my mom" to her before.
she crys, because she always wanted someone to say that.
she always wanted to be a proper mother and have her child be proud that she is his mother.

She wasn't fighting for independence. She was fighting for Communism. Supporters of independence did not have to be communist - most were not. Of course this film could not have been made in Vietnam without being used for Communist propaganda.
