A wonderful film about love, life and death, and the hand over of HK to PRC in 1997.
And if you’re into Asian culture at large, here are some other pearls:
Eat, Drink, Man, Woman.
Saving Face

Comrades, almost a love story (one of the greatest love stories ever!!)
"Why is it that men are so much more interested in women than women in men?"
Virginia Woolf
Realizing that India is really called the sub-continent of Asia, I would recommend "Gandhi" as well.
Also, I really enjoyed "Ran" which is about feudal Japan rather than colonial Asia. From my limited knowledge of the history of the region, Japan was able to remain a closed society, protected from the colonial forces of the time. But it is a fascinating setting and a remarkable film.
"I don't need the defense anymore.....I embrace."---Dame Marjorie Chardin
"The Painted Veil" adaptation of Somerset Maugham's novel of the English in China in the 1920s - Beautiful affirmation of the human capacity to grow, to change and to forgive.
shareJust a thought -- A Passage to India
The Last Emperor
Farewell My Concubine
The Purple Butterfly
All those movies deals (at least partially) with the period when China was a part of the Japanese empire.
Also:
Lagaan
Shakespeare Wallah
The Man Who Would Be King
These ones about the brittish occupation of India.
