What ever happened to the kids?

Just curious what ever happened to the real kids from the movie?

reply

I am one of the real 'Cain' kids from the movie. I am flattered that people are curious about how we are. Its been 16 years since the movie first aired and I can't tell you how good it makes me feel to hear that people are still enjoying our story.
I hope you understand that I will not use our real names as we would like to keep our lives private but I will share some details.
'Jessica Cain' is 32 now. She's been married for 13 years and has 3 children.
'Julie Cain' is 31 now. She's divorced with no children and is a nurse.
'Susan Cain' is 29 now. She's been married for 4 years. Has no children. She's recently moved back to the U.S. from living overseas for 3 years.
'Cindy Cain' died at age 17. She would have been 25 now.
And 'Baby Jason Cain' is 23 now. He's much taller than his older sisters who used to pick on him because they were bigger. He's not married and has no children.
All in all, we are all doing very well. Unfortunately, we no longer have a relationship with 'Peppers' and most of us don't comminucate with the 'Birney's' who recieved custody of us. We do, however, keep in touch with our biological mother, 'Callie Cain'.
Thank you for caring.

I just watched this show yesterday & I cried almost through the whole show. I am sorry to ask this & just tell me no if you do not want to answer - What happened to Cindy? I do not mean to pry. So how is your mother? So were you the oldest of the children? Sorry just concerned.

Thanks Stephanie

I read an article that stated she committed suicide. God Bless them and may she rest in peace.

That was not your place to say that when the sister didn't answer. SHAME ON YOU!

This movie came out when I was 12, and I cry every single time I watch it. I have been curious as to what happened to the children, and I am glad to hear, for the most part, you are all doing well. I am incredibly sad to hear about your sister's death. In fact, I am crying as I write this. When you see a story like this on TV, you become so invested in the people involved, and you start to feel like you know them. So to hear that one of the "Cain" children died at so young an age....it is like finding out your next door neighbor died.
Good luck to the rest of you, and I hope that the rest of your lives are filled with happiness and peace.

I had a worse adolescence (beginning at age 10) in the 1980's then that, AND NO ONE CARED. I then lost my elder brother to what they said was suicide in late Sept 2021, and my mother passed away two days after that. I have never married and have no kids. [email protected]

I just came across this movie for the first time. I must have been so busy doing stuff back in the day that I never even realized this movie existed until I stumbled across it on Youtube. I'm a guy and this story put me in tears bigtime.

It is really nice of you reltubaras to post here and update us on your true life story. My heart goes out to the loss of your sister Cindy. I hope you patched things up with your maternal mother. I'm sure she loved you all along, although she knew she was incapable at the time to properly care for you. It was good that she seeked help. I am also so sorry you lost touch with the Peppers. If they were really as nice a people as the movie portrayed them, it is sad they had to release custudy of you all.

May God (if he really does exist) Bless you.

desertray: God is the almighty creator, and back in what 'day'? You mean back years ago. There is no such thing as 'back in the day', and I was worn out from busyness by the time I was 22 in 1992 when this came out, and I still managed to watch it on tv.

reply

I can't believe it is you, I am glad to hear that you guy are all alright, I am sorry about Cindy, my God, what happen?

I am also sorry to hear that you lost touch with the Peppers, if it had been me, I would have written them a letter or a phone call telling them just 'Thank you' for all they did for me and my siblings.

You should know your story inspired me so much to try and help out with children in bad homes. I got overly passionate about the subject though particurally with the subjects like your mother. My sister almost ended up like Callie if I hadn't stepped in, I bet she would be completely Callie if I moved out of the house we live in with my nephew. Oh stories like your inspired me to writing one story that I am working on at the moment, something to help reach out to not only bad mothers like Callie but to the kids like you, the social workers and anyone in the department of family and most of all to citizens out there that should always lend a helping hand.

reltubaras - Thank you so much for the update.

I just finished watching this movie - I had tivoed it the other night and just finished it today. I remember watching it years ago as well.

It is just the saddest situation. The scene that always gets me is when Jessie runs into the field when the police and social worker comes to take her away and Harlan goes to get her and is telling her that it will be okay. She cries, "Daddy." and that just does it for me. Sends me to tears everytime. I'm a Daddy's girl myself and the idea of someone taking you from you Daddy's arms is too much to bear.

Many many hugs to you and your siblings. I sure hope that God has blessed the rest of your lives with many blessing and great joy. Y'all certainly deserve it.

The second article kind of made me mad.
They clearly state in the beginning that Samantha had taken her own life, but at the very end, they wrote, "Samantha was unavailable for comment" ....... REALLY?! Way to be insensitive

reply

Yeah, I just read that...how incredibly rude and insensitive! So mad over that! And is reltubaras really one of the Cain kids like she claims to be? I don't know....everything she said in her post can be found online (and in that People article). It would be cool if one of the Cain kids did come on here to post but since they never logged onto imdb after that post, I kinda questioned if it was really one of the Cain kids or someone else pretending to be them. I love this movie though....just really sad and it's so tragic that one was lost to suicide.

reply

Yes I would imgine she really is one of the kids. Since of of them really is named Sara and reltubaras is Sara Butler backward.
