I think there was a note at the beginning of the movie, "The following is based on a true story.." But don't quote me. It's been so long since I've seen it.

Yes this movie is a true story i grew up with the family in Newton Iowa and was best friends with the youngest girl when she was around middle school age. It is very true.

reply

Yes this is based on a true Story about the Cooper Kids from Newton, IA. My room-mate from college was one of the real Cooper Kids.

I tried to find some information on the web about this case but found next to nothing about their true story. Where can I find accurate information about their case and the parties involved?

reply

The actual last name of the family was Cooper. The children were adopted by the Butler's which is their Aunt and Uncle. This happened in the 80s around Newton Iowa which is in Jasper County. Hopefully this info will help your search.

It's scary, I look SO MUCH LIKE JESSIE! And my name is Jessica! Spooky

reply

Yes, this movie, Although I've never seen it, was based on a true story. I grew up with them. My parents are good friends with the Butlers, and I was quite alot younger than they were. I remember playing around with them as a younger child. I'm now one of Coopers' childs older buddys. I watch her and have been her Buddy since she was a little tyke.

How much of the movie was actually true? Did the foster family break up after the Cooper children were removed? Were the children ever able to reconcile with their birth mother? What happened to their biological father?

reply

well i do know the foster parents were paula and larry mick and yes they did break after the cooper children left. mike and rhonda butler(aunt and uncle) adopted the children.

Lexi was 11, and yes it was based on a true story. I got to meet the young lady I was playing. Her name isn't actually Susie though. I can't remember now what it is. I, who played Susie was 7 (the long red-headed one).

So what happened to the kids? Are they ok? Do they see their mother? Have their lives been better since the adoption?

reply

Yes it is a true story. I personally knew the family this movie was made about. They lived in Newton, IA. My parents used to take turns with Karen carpooling her kids & my syblings to & from the Christian school. I was too young to remember that part of it, my sisters told me about that. I did however know Samantha, the youngest girl. We were about the same age. She committed suicide when we were still in highschool. I have been looking for this movie ever since. I can't seem to find a copy of it. If you know anyone who has a copy, please let me know. If you want to read the story it is at http://www.geocities.com/murder_stories3/in_the_best_interest_of_the_children_sarah_jessica_parker.html This case even helped change some child welfare laws. It was really sad how those kids were brought up & treated. I know Karen had a mental problem, & I applaud her for volunteering to get help. At the same time, she had to know once her kids experienced a normal family life, they wouldn't want to go back to her. It was a heartbreaking thing, & it was really sad to see it played since we knew all who were involved. Amanda, Anna, Sara, Samantha, & Justin are their real names. Amanda went on to do really well though with everything that happend. Anyway...I hope I have helped answer your question.

Hi. The next time the movie airs I can record it for you - either on vcr or a dvd -R. I was in the halfway house in Cedar Rapids after Karen (did not know her). The place was Hillcrest House. Also, many of the movie scenes were filmed at the Abbe Center in Marion, IA. This is the Linn County mental health unit (I was also here for a short time before going to Hillcrest). In the end of the movie where the aunt and uncle drive away with the children - that is the Abbe Center and they are headed east on County Home Road towards Whitter.
Let me know if you want me to record this movie - I will be glad to. It was neat hearing about what you wrote about the real family.

Yes, it was a true story. I remember seeing it on "60 Minutes" after the children were taken from the Peppers; it got a lot of publicity. I don't think Pepper was their real last name, however. "Mrs. Pepper" was on the show and said the way in which the children were taken from her was exactly as it was depicted in the movie. It was obvious she was still grieving for them.
