lars von trier

i wonder what lars thinks of this film. woody certainly achieves what lars has done with his style... and, woody also has good reason for the choice of camerawork that complements the documentary style...

indeed woody has experimented similarly before as in Zelig, but i thought this time the camera movement really aided the outstanding performances of the actors, including woody himself. i believe judy davis was outstanding.

Von Trier is problably envious, this movie could be seen as the direct inspiration for the dogme concept, but only Festen and idioterne comes close to the results that Allen reached with this one.

In it's own subtle way it's also pretty inventive, there are a lot of jump cuts, for example.

reply

as far as jump cuts go i think we should recognise Breathless as being the first to do so, even though it did come as an after thought of cutting the film shorter

Of course À bout de souffle was the first one, but Husbands uses it as a much more integrated part. Also, the way the actors move around freely and scenes are made up of obviously different takes, without much regard for continuity, is very different from "normal" filmmaking. It's an obvious template for the dogme films, which were hailed as very original, when they first appeared.

I'm not directly familiar with Von Trier's work, but what about the movie "Faces" by John Cassavettes? It also used handheld camera work to create a documentary feel that ended up being very effective given the subject matter.

i was thinking the same thing about Cassavetes while watching this, though this entertained me quite a bit more to be honest. and about the jump cuts...honestly, i hate Godard and think his jump cuts are gimmicky. Allen uses them to much greater emotional effect, and he never comes off pretentious like Godard.

reply

I'm personally never like a kind of movie like that, which used handheld camera to give emotional effect.Perhaps, that would be so much effective, but also that would certainly give me a headache..
