'Then why didn't you stop yourself?'

This is what Woody's unseen interviewer asks when Woody describes how he is becoming progressively entangled with Rain. I think the question gets to the crux of this film. All of the main characters wreck their own lives because they are weak; they lack the self-discipline to face up to what is best for themselves, let alone their loved ones.
