Judy Davis is priceless

She's a revelation in this. What a great actress. The whole movie is really good.

I get the feeling she based Sally on someone (a genuine neurotic) she knew. The character is just too real.

I agree! One of the great comic performances of the 1990s. And heartbreaking, too -- which is an odd thing to be able to pull off, given that her character is not particularly endearing.

But I think the scene where she's having a drink with the guy who wants to bring her to the opera is one of the funniest five minutes ever committed to film.

Bronagh Gallagher/The Commitments: runner up to Joe Pesci for times f* was said in a movie.

The way Sally (Davis) sinks everything that Michael (Liam Neeson) says about their date at the concert is embarrassing to witness, but it's also so funny; it's an effective scene. Judy Davis definitely deserved her Oscar nomination.

You both mentioned her best scenes- Hysterical how she's screaming on the phone to the husband before that first opera date & her criticizing everything Michael did on their first date. Hilarious.

I like Judy Davis a lot, but her mannerisms here very strongly reminded of her character in Barton Fink. Not sure if it was entirely intentional.

I saw a license plate on a car here recently abbreviated word for hedgehog and I immediately thought of her character's thoughts during sex about hedgehogs in this movie. I wonder why the vehicle's owner had hedgehog as their vanity license plate here - it'd be funny if it was related to this movie, but I doubt it. Weirdest vanity plate I've ever seen was on a nice, shiny cadillac 10 years ago that just said "MILDEW".

I specifically reminded her - bedside table! On the Kangaroo!

She was the best nominee that year. Too bad she didn't win.

I know she's been on 5 Woody Allen movies already, but I still think they should be doing more films together.

reply

The scene where she's drinking with the guy who wants to bring her to opera is literally the best acting that an actress has performed in a scene.

Judy Davis is incredible in this movie. Check out Beatrice Straight in Network for another unbelievable performance.

reply

Yes, Judy Davis is mesmerizing - her buttoned-up intensity and prickliness in this movie is difficult to witness, but very impressive. You can't stop watching her, as uncomfortable as it is to do so. She is truly one of the best actors alive.

Great performance.... I don't mean to be offensive, but she looks about 45 or 50 in this film....doesn't look 36 to me ....was this her natural look or did she have age makeup I wonder.
Also, one movie synopsis says she and Jack character were married 25 years.

reply

She was 43 when she made this film, where did you get 36 from?

reply

IMDB and Wikipedia both list birthdate as april 1955. Film was released on 1992, but possibly shot in 1991. So, aybe not 36, but 37 at the oldest.....cant recall where i read the 25 years marriage part.... One of the synopsis on IMDB , or an External

I didn't know that.
