Margaret's request

Toward the end, Helen wanted to stay at Howard's End and Anthony Hopkins said no.
Why did he care? It was empty anyway, and it was only for one night. Why did he say no?
Also....the following day, wasn't Helen there anyway? It looked she she spent the night anyway, despite the big fight the night before about if she could or not.

He said no because Helen was pregnant "illigally" and he didn' t want to accept her because has done this mistake.. That' s why he and Margaret was fighting because he had cheated his wife in the past (with Lenard' s wife) and Margaret forgave him and so she asks to accept her sister...

He thought that there was a chance that one night would extend to two and so on, and that she'd end up not leaving. The easiest way to make sure that never happened was to deny the request in the first place.

They shouldn't have, because they didn't have permission, but it certainly did look like Helen and Margaret stayed at Howards End overnight. The next morning Helen and Margaret were still there and Helen was carrying some fresh cut flowers, giving the impression that she was not planning to leave soon.
