Editing

Did anyone think this movie could have been edited better? Scenes faded in and out almost without warning.

reply

No, it was done on purpose. The mise-en-scene elements (fade ins) and other editing techniques help enhance the story's symbolism. There are longer takes/shot lengths compared to the average film. And the tracking shots glide from scene to scene to show you are looking into a wider story and not necessarily from one character's point of view. Some people don't like it and think it was a poor decision, but I understand why the filmmakers chose these techniques.

reply

Agreed. The scene where Henry confesses his indescretion to Margurete is virtually "chopped" into three, with no seeming logic.

reply

Yes, I agree, the editing was a bit weird but the movie is still magnificent despite of it.

Yes, I agree, I really found the movie extremely flat and boring and the editing was one of the things that annoyed me the most...

It got sort of ridiculous in the confession scene where it just seems they couldn't come up with one good take and spliced all the takes together with fade outs. I'm no editing expert by any means, I'm sure there's some type of interpretation to it but it got distracting. I also noticed how cutting from one scene to another seemed abrupt at times.
