Funny and ironic scene

One scene that always makes me chuckle is when the Schlegel's well Margaret has Mrs. Wilcox and her family over their house for dinner. One of the women asks Mrs. Wilcox about the women's suffrage and Mrs. Wilcox replies "well I'm only too grateful to not have the vote myself" ha ha. Does anyone get the irony in this? VANESSA REDGRAVE putting women's rights down. lol.

reply

Ha, Ha! Yes, indeed. I'm laughing too now because I never picked up on it. In my defense, its probably because she is such a great, great actess and just so intriguing to watch that I only saw Ruth Wilcox. Honest. God, that was such a terrific scene among many.

PS: After posting the above I had an afterthought. Do you think Merchant and Ivory as well as the entire cast and production team got a good laugh out of that as well?

reply

I like that scene too because Margaret Schlegel can see that Mrs. Wilcox's opinion that she is only too happy not to have the vote has annoyed everyone else and that, although she probably believes in women's suffrage herself, she does nothing to make her guest uncomfortable and asks whether they should go up for coffee. It is small polite delicacies like that shows Margaret Schlegel's humanity.

Another funny scene is when Mrs. Wilcox says that if the mother's of warring nations sat down together there would be no more wars. Then somebody replies, seriously: "Absolutely. If the mother's went to war there would be nobody left to defend".

reply

Ha ha! So funny!

Did you know that the Japanese money people forced M & I to wrap it up, when there was so much more they wanted to do? It's discussed on the DVD which is worth getting. Whatever they, M & I, were thinking, it is gone....gone forever. Shame.
We will never see the likes of them again.

reply

I have the DVD but I am ashamed to say I've not looked at the extras. There is something about Merchant & Ivory films and the Edwardian era I love so much.

reply

Very snappy.

One thing I noticed about the discussion scene is that there was a layer of chatter in the background until Ruth started to speak, and at that moment everyone else went dead quiet.
