Mine (out of many) is when Steve Martin is trying to smooth over the crazy things his "father-in-law" said and the boss brushes it off, saying "Oh, never mind. Bernie was always like that."

shareWhen he's ever-so tentatively seducing Becky with just his finger and they end up in the fireplace, I was in tears at the cinema when I first saw that scene and it's still one of my faves in the movie.
"You could go to jail for this." From that moment on, I knew I'd love this movie, it's just so out there.
The counseling session with the preacher ('purge, Gwen, purge') and the dog leaving the room during an awkward moment.
The scene with her 'mother' at the bedroom door, up to that point she had only said 'hello' to people and you're wondering if that's all she could say, then she has that little rant against her 'husband'.

The Irish lullaby - it's so tense before he starts to sing and you laugh at how high pitched he's singing, especially with the weird ending to the song, then you see how emotional his father becomes - it starts out funny and ends up touching.
Newton's Dad was brilliant in this. When he has tears in his eyes after the song, it was so hilarious-- and touching as well. I love how they show the dog perk up, when Newton hits the high note in Too Ra Loo Ra.
My favourite scenes that are touching is when his Dad talks to Gwen through the door, and also at the start, when him and Gwen are walking, and the seduction in the apartment. It was really intense to me. They have good chemistry.
The funniest scenes... well, the crazy dance scene, and Gwen's Dad. Newton's boss was great, too. The marraige counselor scene...

The hilarious concept of pulling off all the lying and at the same time, catching themselves mixing up fact and fiction. Those moments were classic comedy.
I don't know if two other actors could have given the comedic finesse that these two did. I've seen this movie so many times and never get tired of it
"This coffee table...it's. my. mothers." "I know, it's not really my taste either, but this whole thing represents a compromise."
"Boy, for a while this was really a great marriage... Well, it was! Until you came into it."
Also, when they are talking, alone, and she says "no, Boomer was just a one-nighter was all!" And then their faces when they realize they are talking about this like it is reality!
The "marriage counselling" scenes were hilarious (Christopher Durang as Reverend Lipton was really funny) as was the late reception.🐭
