whats with the gum??

I liked the movie a lot, i did, but i found the constant gum chewing by ian hart way too distracting!! and i dont think john used to chew gum that much.
and what with all the cigarette puffing and drinking and eating like a goat? it seemed like he couldnt keep his mouth unoccupied with something for a friggin' second (hidden innuendo maybe?).
for me that small thing really ruined the movie, especially since it had many close ups where it was really hard to avoid all the mastication.
the highlight was the scene where he's on the phone with cyn where he is 1)chewing gum 2)puffing 3)nibbling on the pen all on close-up. plus his fingernails were gross.
i guess im the weirdo here but he certainly overdid it, dont you think?
