Why did the hotel concierge take a dislike to Kevin?

On occasions it almost seemed as if Mr. Hector had a personal grudge against Kevin McCallister.

Was it because Tim Curry's character preferred sticking to routine and wasn't sure how to properly handle the unusual situation of a kid checking in all by himself?

He thought he would be a poor tipper

reply

Thanks, that's certainly a possibility...The bellhop Cedric was not too happy with the nature of the tip he received from Kevin. However, given that we are talking about a 5 star hotel, I think that the staff members are expected to be more professional and they shouldn't be desperate to supplement their income by relying on such gratuities.

Maybe the concierge also felt slightly envious, as he didn't like the idea of a kid having all that cash at his disposal...

reply

For all we know, he was probably a jerk to lots of guests at that hotel. Not just Kevin but very few people complained.

This time period was before written Yelp ratings/ reviews existed on the Internet. Or else he was potentially get bad reviews.

That's true - the attitude Curry's character displayed may have been reflective of his personality traits. He didn't seem like the type to mollycoddle guests (unless they were celebrities) and appeared irritable in his interactions with most other people, including his colleagues. Yes, no websites like Tripadvisor or Yelp in the 1990s!

EASY ANSWER....KEVIN IS A LITTLE SHIT AND TIM CURRY'S CHARACTER IS A GIANT ASSHOLE.

Kevin pooped in the bed

reply

Haha, these are also possibilities...though I have to say that Kevin didn't seem too annoying to me - he was never mean to others for the sake of it. I think that he was just a regular kid (with an exceptional ability to mastermind elaborate schemes). However, the concierge is certainly one of the more memorable characters in the movie.

I think Curry was simply suspicious about Kevin. Dislike is a strong word, but it's like you said wasn't sure how to properly handle the unusual situation of a kid checking in all by himself. Kevin didn't fit the narrative and he stood out. As the manager Curry was use to a routine and it probably gets boring, but now Kevin come strolling in and gives him something interesting to investigate. Curry suspected something off about the whole situation from the get go, and he was determined to sniff it out. Nothing personal against Kevin

Well put, it's possible that he would have behaved in a nicer fashion if Kevin had fully explained the situation regarding how he got separated from his family. The concierge did seem extremely satisfied, even childishly gleeful when his suspicions that the credit card was stolen turned out to hold water.

reply

To be honest, I find it odd that the concierge entered Kevin's room without being let in. That seems really suspicious to me and seems predator-like but that could just be the true crime in me.

reply

He just suspected Kevin was up to something, he saw right through the con job he gave the receptionist

reply

Maybe he hates kids
