What did Kevin think was going to happen?

He stole his Dad's money and credit cards, what exactly was his end game? Did he plan on just living by himself in the Plaza for the rest of his life, or did he eventually plan on reconciling with his family? Because if he planned on the latter he had to realize that he was going to be in a sh!t load of trouble for stealing his Dad's money.

Now usually I would buy the excuse that Kevin was just a kid and didn't have the ability to foresee the consequences of his actions but it was clearly established that he was really smart and considering the fact that he was able to fool the hotel staff into giving him a room I am not going to buy that excuse.

reply

Maybe he thought he could charm his way out of it, that filthy animal.

reply

Yeah given how his family constantly blamed him for everything (the Christmas Pageant is a prime example), I am not going to bet on his chances.

reply

Kevin's family is rich. They probably give him infinite slack. I know this from having spoken personally with Macaulay Culkin. We were on the same flight, and he was way too drugged-up to give coherent responses, but I will assume by his half-conscious nods that he agrees with everything I said.

reply

Again the first 20 minutes or so doesn't indicate that

reply

And not to mention of course with him being so highed up at the time, nah!

What was Kevin supposed to do when he ended up stranded in NYC? Sleep in the streets? Kevin did spend way too much money on frivolous things, but I’m sure his parents were glad that he stayed in a nice hotel and was able to buy food rather than if he had been alone in NYC with no resources.

reply

Or he could have told the lady at the counter what happened and the whole thing never would have happened

reply

Yeah, I agree. And he could have stayed with security until his family had showed up.

reply

He might have been old and smart enough to foresee the consequences of his actions, but since he wasn't a provider, he might have been unaware of the damage he's done. A 10 year old isn't necessarily able to tell the difference between the price of an ice cream bowl served in a luxurious hotel, and one that's made by her mother from store-bought cheap ice cream.

I 100% believe what Kevin said he wanted to be away from them but when push came to shove he woulda eventually missed them and informed someone. It wouldn't have mattered though.. that credit card woulda been stalled due to Peter stalling it and they woulda found him in just a couple of days at the latest (well I'm sure 92 credit cards would be slower than now.)

Kevin just wanted to let out some steam and feel better about himself so away he went and fun he had.. if the Wet Bandits hadn't showed up he woulda been in a lot more trouble but due to them and the idiots at the hotel they made it worse and I see him not getting off as bad. I see the parents getting out of the room service due to his age and the hotel workers being so incompetent.

reply

He probably didn’t think it was going to be a big deal as long as his folks cleaned up the mess. I mean what was he supposed to do...the little dude was living large tho.

I think that despite him being intelligent, Kevin was in many ways, still a kid, and was also good at making things up as he went along. He made good on a bad, mixed-up situation, and decided to have fun in spite of everything. I mean, he didn't want to spend another Christmas with his mixed-up family, and he was not very excited about spending Christmas in a tropical climate (and as it turned out, he was right about how crappy such an idea was, based on what we saw with all the rain in Florida).

So, he's in NYC, a place he's never been to, and for many, it's an ideal environment to go to because the city is amazing at Christmastime, and it even has snow! So he decided to have his own real Christmas vacation, and maybe he'd then go to the cops and ask them to help him find his family. But he wanted to have fun first, and was improvising as he went along.
