Why is Kevin the one to blame on the Christmas Pageant?

it was Buzz who started it and Kate was looking in shock. Kevin wouldn't have shove Buzz and send the whole pageant falling to the floor if he didn't started the prank.

So they are at home in the living room to talk about what happened at the pageant. there were two sides of the story. Buzz went first and confessed what he did was wrong. Kevin as suspicious he was took a moment to think what to say and Buzz goes up to him and whispered trout sniffer to him. It pissed him off that the whole family believed in his lies and gave a big "F.U" as he storms out of the room and goes to the attic

Of course Buzz is more to blame, but Kevin needed to play his hand better, and keep his cool, even after the trout sniffer comment. Here's what he should have said.

"First, I would like to apologize to (his other siblings that were on stage). Obviously I had no intention in involving you guys in this matter between Buzz and I, and hope none of you were hurt.

Next, Mom and Dad, I am very sorry for adding even more embarrassment to you in front of the whole church. While I think we can all agree that I did not create the situation, I did contribute. For that I apologize.

For the rest of our family that was in attendance I apologize for any embarrassment this might have caused you as well.

As for Buzz, I do not apologize and do not accept his. Buzz intentionally and maliciously embarrassed me in front of the entire church. And he did so out of petty jealously. And we all know him well enough that his "apology" was all an act and he doesn't regret this one bit. I was trying to do something on stage that would make Mom and Dad as well as our whole family proud, but he made it a night of great shame. And if you let him off the hook for this, then we can guarantee he will do it again."

You do realize that Kevin is 9-10 years old? No kid that age could be that articulate and calm while being sided against by his entire family. Your apology sounds like it was written by a grad student.

Maybe Sandman is!

But you're correct of course: Kevin was still furious over how Buzz went out of his way to humiliate him and how he seemingly caught all of the blame for the incident. I don't think his reaction to Buzz's obviously (except to everyone else) fake apology was unexpected for some kids.

But I think this was script was written almost as if being retold by Kevin at a later time. Surely, everyone but himself would be blameless, and every adult was out to get him.

But he was clever enough to outsmart two criminals again!

reply

No way should Kevin have been blamed. He was in the right to clock Buzz!

Kevin shoulda handled it better but in the grand scheme he was very right about the whole thing.. like someone said Buzz was probably the firstborn and had a halo around him, he got away with murder a ton and sadly he never got his full comeuppance in the big picture. This is the closest he got to that but sadly it coulda been better.

Buzz in general had nothing to gain from doing that he was just being a douche and embarrassing the family in front of hundreds of people. Sadly besides Kate (the dad wasn't that ashamed oddly,) the rest of the dumb family enjoyed it.. it just shows how awful they really were. Frankl getting told off was awesome though that was a long time coming.

The whole rant shows how much Kevin grew up.. 1st go round Kevin woulda had a tantrum and pouted like a 5 year old while everyone laughed at him. This Kevin meanwhile has went threw a ton and has no reason to putt up with Buzz's BS and told him and everyone else off.. he won the bit before and after. Buzz just could sit back and be stupid.

I agree- even though they both did the wrong thing, there is a big age gap between the two brothers. Kevin should not of been held to the same standard as Buzz and Kevin’s reaction was on par for a child versus a bratty teen who intended to humiliate his little brother. I was more shocked that the entire audience- including his family- found it hilarious to join in on ridiculing a child. During the ‘explanation’ the family should of also apologized to Kevin for egging it on by laughing.

buzz should grow up to be a standup comedian, he had everyone laughing when he used those fake candles as drum sticks.

The moment Buzz said "Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury" it should've been clear to them that he wasn't sincere and didn't take the whole thing seriously.

reply

You gotta understand that the “jury” is stupid.

At first they blamed both of them but they accepted Buzz’s half ass apology and since Kevin refused to apologize he wasn’t let off the hook. If he did apologize they probably would have forgiven him but Kevin had too much pride.
