Twenty years later. Uneven and strange choices.
Watched the movie yesterday. I haven't seen it since 1993.I thought it was pretty good..............back then. In 2013 I have a different opinion. Not terrible, but overall I would have to say that it's a wildly uneven movie. The fact that they basically presented a fictional account of Jimmy Hoffa's life doesn't bother me but the production design. Ugh. While it might sound shallow I had some real trouble with the production design. Some of the movie was filmed on location and has an authentic, real feeling while other scenes are obviously taking place on a sound stage - which makes no sense to me. I don't understand what the filmmakers were trying to do. It was distracting and that's not good for a movie.
I think ultimately the problem was that with "Hoffa" DeVito wanted to be thought of as a "serious" filmmaker. He's better when making dark comedies like "Death to Smoochie"
