Peyton seemed like a better mother than Claire

obviousy she was psycho but I can't help but noticed she almost seemed more interested in caring for those kids than Claire.

I always wondered how the film would compare if the roles were reversed. Pretty, blonde Becky De Mornay plays the asthmatic, dowdy married mom and the brunette Annabella Sciorra takes on the psycho role.

Mrs Mott/Peyton was traumatised from losing her own baby - hence the psycho.

reply

I thought the same thing. Peyton showed far more interest in Emma and the baby than Claire ever did.

Instead of joining them when they were playing the game, Claire just looked jealous and walked away.

Claire did nothing to make the nursery look cheerful, it was very sterile, almost like a hospital room. She wouldn't listen to Emma, who told her she had no fear of Solomon. Why not ask Emma if he ever did anything "bad" to her? Too much of Claire's precious time?

I guess when you are home but just "too busy" with your hobby to take time for your newborn, taking time to speak with Emma would have been too much too.

reply

Yeah.

But at least Claire wasn't a raging, raving loon.

I'm team Claire.

Peyton showed any interest because she was unhinged.

That part where Michael, Emma and Ms. Psycho are playing a game, I thought was excellently done. It showed the distrust that Claire had already begun to develop against the babysitter from hell.

And she was right to distrust her.

Claire never smacked Mrs Mott's husband in the face with a spade / shovel and broke his legs.

reply

So, she "distrusted" Peyton, then walked away to do her own thing, instead of going down and joining them.

No, she couldn't be bothered with her own family/kids.

reply

I guess after being sexually molested by your doctor whilst pregnant may be enough to make you distrust a beautiful woman who hones in on your family.

Or, y' know. Bad writing.

reply

If she distrusted Peyton, she should have gone down and joined the game. Or just sat in the room and hung out with them.

But she had no interest in spending time with her own kids.

obviously, what I mean though is despite Peyton, Claire never seemed that interested in her kids. The fact she hired a nanny to give her most of the childcare work in the first place just so she could grow plants and make a greenhouse, not decorating the baby's room, not doing anything about her daughters bullies etc.

reply

Claire did try to do something about the bullying but unfortunately as happens in real life it hadn't made much difference. I'm afraid if Paton had pulled that bully's arm and threatened him the way she did in real life, she'd have been arrested as soon as the child's mother reported it. Much as I'd have loved to have given a smack to some of the bullying little gits at my daughters schools,I've a feeling it may have been frowned upon by other adults and the police?

reply

Claire constantly wanted to talk to her kid and often had the baby with her, as well as incorporating Emma into the household tasks she did like cooking. The accusation that she had little interest in her kids because she hired a nanny, felt left out by Peyton and didn't put tons of ducks and teddy bears into the nursery is ridiculous.

reply

Peyton's interests in the children (and husband for that matter) were not out of love or intrigue, but vengeance. She manipulated the family members in the household so they could turn against Claire. She purposely caused small issues like Claire's dress to be damaged in order to start a small argument with the husband; then causing Claire to lose the papers for his proposal. Her initiative was to turn the husband against his wife. Ditto for the daughter. She only protected her against the bully to show the daughter that her own mother "didn't love her". These were all tricks. It was cool to see how she talked down to that bully, but it was not out of care for the family. Peyton knew Claire was the reason her husband killed himself, and to an extent- she lost the baby (perhaps out of stress). So she went insane.

reply

And none of that would have been possible if Claire had been capable of being a real mother to her children. Instead of being too busy with her hobby.

reply

Why are the pretty ones always crazy.

Lol, kinda true, to be honest. I was surprised how little attention Claire was paying to her newborn son.
