How does this movie end?

After not being able to find Anita's mother, the couple go back to the house where they almost ran over the dog (they knew the owners of the house had gone off on a camping trip), where they end up spending the night. The police surround the house and Howard pretends he's been holding Anita hostage. He runs down the stairs guns blazing and is cut to pieces. The couple had made love that night so they are hoping that Anita could be pregnant. Howard's PO finds Anita at the bottom of the stairs craddling Howard in her arms but she insists Howard had been holding her agaist her will.
