Is this worth seeing?

I remember reading the book this is based on (Black Hope Horror) when I was younger, probably around 1995 or 1996. My recollection of the book is a bit vague, but I remember enjoying it. I've always had an interest in the paranormal and have read many books regarding hauntings, parapsychology textbooks, and the like. Somewhere I still have my copy of the book (picked up at Barnes & Noble on the cheap, as I recall) and I was looking it up because I'd like to read it again. I thought that it might be easier to buy another copy than to go digging for mine, but to my dismay, it seems to have gone out of print and hardcover copies like mine are fetching much higher prices than I'd like to pay for a book I already own.

However, in looking up the book, I discovered this movie. The DVD is available on eBay, but I'm a bit wary of buying it without knowing a great deal about it, and the reviews don't really tell me much, as most people don't seem to have read the book. So, my question is this: for someone who has read the book, is the movie worth a purchase? Or should I just find my copy of the book and give it another read? (Or even try to track down the Unsolved Mysteries episode or TLC's special?)

Thanks to anyone who can provide some insight. :)

I can't tell you whether to see the movie or not, because I have only just ordered a copy myself. But, you can get the DVD on Amazon.com for only $3.12! I think that alone makes it worth a try for anyone who loves a good ghost story.

All my best,

Sheila

Hey Sheila, thanks for the response. I had kinda forgotten about even posting this... haha. Well, did you watch it, and if so, what did you think? I realize I can pick it up on the cheap, I'd just kinda like someone to say it's good or bad or what have you before I slap down the cash and order it.

Well, if you still care a full four years since your original post, I'd say it's worth seeking out, but just barely. This feels like a lot of TV movies — a bit bland and soapy, with cheap production values and rushed scenes. Some of the special effects are cheesy, while others are quite good. It ends abruptly with no resolution; I'm sure the book is the same. Still, the cast makes it worthwhile. I'd give it 6/10 stars.

So is the book worth seeking out?

reply

I like it almost as much as The Haunted (1991).

I thought both this film and the book on which it was based (The Black Hope Horror) were pretty good.

I didn't remember this under the title used on here. I've seen this one on TV. I'm sure it didn't have the 'Grave Secrets' title when it was shown a few years ago. I've had a look through the alternative titles for the movie. I have a feeling that 'Haunting on Hilltop Drive' was used.
