the future?

At the end 'future' Ben is being escorted back to his time by the guy in the White Suit. In that future is his daughter dead? If that were not true then why would he have come back?

I know this can't really be resolved, but I tend to think that he was going back to an alternate future which is really sad but kind of makes him heroic.
