Where Can i get this?

Hi there!
I can't find it anywhere, i know there's a vhs edition in USA(i've seen it cheap on ebay but i don't have a vhs player).Do you know if someone have plans to edit this movie in DVD.It's also impossible to find it in Internet i tried every possible program.I'll apreciate your help very much...
I also know this was made as movie and a tv series, maybe someone knows some sweedish torrent website.....Anyway if it will be ever avaiable on dvd i'll buy it for sure.
I'm a new fan of ingmar bergman but so far, i liked everything i've seen(persona, cries and whispers, autumn sonata, saraband, being the first 3 my favourites til now). i also loved Bille August's Pelle the conqueror, that's why i'm looking foward for "The Best Intentions".
Sorry about my bad english.

The film was originally made for Swedish television and went out in instalments starting on Christmas Day 1992(?). It was edited down to a three-hour version for cinema release and this is what came out on VHS. I have never seen the cinema version but taped the entire TV version, running to about six hours, when it was last shown in England. The full-length version is not a minute too long and I couldn't bear to be without it. Some enterprising company should bring out the entire TV version in a three-disc boxed set.
I have seen the film twice on British television, each time in a slightly different version. The first time there was a sub-plot involving Henrik's uncle. In the second version (the one I taped) this was missing, although the uncle makes an appearance when Henrik takes Anna to meet his mother ...only to vanish from the story without explanation.
There is also a kind of sequel called "Sunday's Children", directed by Ingmar Bergman's son Daniel, which takes the story forward into Ingmar's childhood. Once you get used to the idea of a different actor playing the part of Henrik it is very interesting and enjoyable. I think I even read somewhere that another film about Bergman's parents exists, possibly directed by Liv Ullman ...but I may be wrong about this.
If you hear of "The Best Intentions" being released on DVD, please let us all know. In the meantime treat yourself to the six-hour, three-disc DVD of "Fanny and Alexander" and set aside a day in which to enjoy the experience of watching it.

Thanks for your reply/info.i tought no one would ever reply, because i was the 1st one to post something about this movie.
I was the other day on www.amazon.com and i think they will release it on dvd, at least they already had a section about it,maybe they are in prodution right now.It didn't said anything about which version is,if it's the 6 hour series, or the 3 hour movie, or both.
Fanny and alexander i've downloaded the 5 hour series a few days ago, maybe i'll see it this afternoon(haven't had much time lately). It is avaiable on dvd here in Portugal as a 2 disc set, but i don't remember if it is the series version.I think it is because there's a equal english release, that contains the 5 hour version, with only 2 discs and alot of dvd's here are just the same as in england, and are only diferent because of the subtiles and cover. It's not cheap but if it is the full thing,i'm already collecting money :)
Thanks again.

I too am looking forward to a Criterion Edition. I already have Ingmar Bergman's collection on DVD that is available so far. Fanny & Alexander is from Criterion (a specialty DVD merchandiser for classic films) - and I have the 4DVD boxed set...2 dvds for the TV version (about 5 hours), the making of DVD (which is fabulous) and of course the cinema version of 3 hours, which I haven't seen yet. I never wanted to stop watching the TV serial...it is excellent. Smiles of a Summer Night was great as was The Seventh Seal...with max von sydow...amazing.
I think perhaps it might take awhile for The Best Intentions to come out on DVD, especially in the US market...because I. Bergman never directed it. Bille August did...and he's not that famous here. I am begging anyone to email me how I can see the original 6 hour version...either to download it or buy their VHS tapes or NTSC tapes...I'm begging for it! I saw the 3hour cinema version and never realised that it was 3 hours...at the end of which I knew there was more coming...but was left with my mouth open. The best family saga movie I have ever seen. Fanny & Alexander is also up there as well as Sonnenschein - but that is with Fiennes.
Please let me know : [email protected]
Any information would be great and thanks in advance.

I've already seen this movie more than five times (the three hour version) because I taped it from the tv some years ago. I remember that one of those times it was on a summer afternoon, and althought I already knew the story and that all, once the movie ended it was quite strange to notice that it was hot summer outside and that the sky was actually blue. I know I love a movie when once it's over I steel feel its world as real as the real world, I mean emmotionaly. and this movie it's so depressing and beautifull at the same time! I've also watched it with three more friends closed in a empty small room (only a tv and a videoplayer) with the lights off during the news eve of 2001/2002. when somebody turned on the lights three hours later, we looked at each other and it took a long time to start talking again.
I also would like to have it on dvd, because I have no longer a videoplayer. I have a friend living in stokolm and he said he will look for some copy, but possibly without subtitles. I he finds it I'll post some news in here.
sorry for my english mas acontece que também sou português e o meu inglês não é dos melhores.

Well, I have good news and bad, it has indeed been released just now a couple of days ago, as a bare-bones 2-disc but no foreign subtitles dvd-set and is now avvialable to buy here in Sweden:

Hopefully this means a Criterion collection will be forthcoming eventually, we can but hope, would be a shame if only us Swedes would be able to watch it and enjoy it!

That is certainly a step in the right direction. I note that this is a PAL version, region 2.

The lack of access to a decent DVD release of this movie (the full, original version) is just stunningly sad and disappointing.

That is so sad to finally see a DVD9 PAL release with no foreign subtitles. :(

I see from the link that it's only 5hrs32mins? I thought the orig was 6 hours!

Are there any updates for a release of this movie for USA markets?
