I didn't like it first time I saw it. Tried it again. Have now watched it probably 4 or 5 times... great movie.

shareSeveral movies didn't do a lot for me the first time, but just something about them made me want to rewatch at least a part of it. I can't remember specifically what turned me on to about this movie the second time, as it's been 20+ years ago, but I think it was the character-driven story and very solid acting. There was a lot of talent on the screen, and the dialogue was interesting. The guy that recommended me to it waaay back then loved it, and he asked me what I thought about it after I watched it. I think I said something like, "It was okay" and indicated it wasn't that good for me. I wish I could go back and tell him I'd reevaluated and I think it's great now, but I lost track of him somewhere around 1997.

I mean, they have to compete with a LOT of other books, audio dramas, plays, TV series, and films that I also want to watch/re-watch, so...
shareMost of the movies that others convinced me to give a second chance didn't change my opinion. It was always something that *I* saw in the movie that got it the second watch that made me like it better. You might be the same. Some people only can change their own mind when they decide to change it for their own reasons, if that makes any sense.
shareIt does. I think you're largely right. But, other people might be able to convince me to take a second look and give me the opportunity to see something I didn't before. There is the rare chance, too, that somebody might have noticed a puzzle piece that makes the movie "click", too.

sharenever seeing it before, bought the bluray based on the PUT THAT COFFEE DOWN scene, and the writer. this movie is not for me. felt like a filmed stage play. actors did great, script was okay, just NOTHING of interest in it at all for me.
will always do more research now.
Haven't watched it twice, no need to watch it ever again.
It is a stage play, and you get the best actors ever doing it and you are front row.
Maybe research "robots fighting robots" next time and you wont go far wrong.

At least with Glengarry you can hear what the actors say compared to TENET, because the dialogue is very important, along with the performances around that dialogue. Rather than the concept being all important, then the SFX, then the performances, then the dialogue.
totally true. he completely botched the tenet dialog mix. COMPLETELY. I'm upset at that, but impressed with the execution of concept. still, not a battling robots guy :D And I love inception too.
I watched GGGR, and respect what it did, it just wasn't entertaining for ME. I didn't know it was just a play or I would not have wasted money on the Blue Ray
I don't really understand the logic of that criticism. First, because it's an amazing play, so it being put on screen so I can watch it is wonderful, and second, because if it wasn't based on anything at all and I saw this film, I'd love it as-is. So what does it matter what the source is?
I mean, if you didn't like it, you didn't like it, and that's groovy, but what do you mean by "filmed stage play" being a negative? I've watched plays that were filmed (not movies, I mean just a film of a play) and loved those, too.
Plays are fine, but not for me. I did not know it was a play when I saw the clip, and bought the disc.
It is well made and acted, just wasn't the exciting thriller, sales, competition, whatever thing I was expecting.
I personally found it very thrilling (although I'd definitely call it a drama, not a thriller), and was pretty much hooked from end-to-end, but to each his own.
I'm a bit curious now about if this style of dramatic action appeals to you at all. For instance, films like The Breakfast Club are very similar in terms of limited locations, action through dialogue, and so forth, and in many ways are very theatre-like. The Breakfast Club isn't based off of a play, and there are others that qualify (Reservoir Dogs and Hateful Eight from Tarantino, for instance, Barton Fink, Rear Window, Clerks, etc.) Do any films like this appeal to you?
If you'll permit my curiosity to be indulged a bit more, I'd also be interested to know if any films that are based on plays are your cup-o-tea. 12 Angry Men is the first that came to my mind, as it's very much "one-room thriller", it's based on a play, and it's also known as a masterwork of cinema. Again, there would be many to consider here, like any of the great musicals (Sound of Music, Oliver!, etc.), the works of Shakespeare, and just many others like Frost/Nixon.
It takes brass balls to finish this film.
The acting in this film was as good as any every made. The film is not for everybody. It's a play in a limited claustrophobic setting. It's the acting that makes it a good film.
I associate it with Petrified forest in some ways.
If you finish it, you get a set of steak knives.
shareYeah other than the coffee is for closers scene this movie is an absolute slog to get through. I can't imagine watching this in it's original play format. Woulda fallen asleep 15 minutes in. This movie stinks!
