Can someone explain...(Spoilers )

Can somebody explain why Vacendak became a good guy at the end? I really just don't get why he would suddenly want to help Alex. Didn't anyone else find this odd?

Also, about the personal ID code that Alex got wrong but Vacendak lied about....
I just watched this film for the first time the other day, but as soon as it got to that part, I already knew the first 6 numbers he was going to say. I haven't gone back and looked yet, but was he just reciting the code number that McCandless was having him punch in?

He did start to like Alex through the movie and Alex saved his life as well. Also if he had not lied about the id number then Alex would have been killed, his boss would be dead, and that VP who he hates would have been in charge of the company.

That's about what I'd thought. But still it just seemed too....nice.
I mean, yeah, there was the part where Alex saved him, so he was given a few minutes for a headstart. And there was Vacendak's line about how he hasn't made many friends, and I understand that he hated that other guy and would like to have him dead...But, in the end, they just seemed too much like buddies. I mean, it was like they'd already discussed all of this in advance and plotted it out. It just came off a little silly. Maybe it's just me.

Jagger had no real beef with Estevez. He was just a paid bounty hunter, probably remembers a time when the world was a better place and thinks things would be alot nicer without Hopkins character about. It's an odd change in his personality and very sudden. Sort of a hallmark of confused hollywood films.

I think the main reason for Vacendaks behavior was money. If he shot Alex, he wouldn't get paid, because he blew the job, but with this outcome, Alex would have to pay him for delivering his body to keep up the scharade.

I think Vacendak's hatred of Michellette (the guy that would have taken over from McCandless) was the driving force behind saving Alex's butt.

I also believe that McCandless was telling Alex the truth about his recent revelations. The playacting bit was enough of a deception to make Alex think that McCandless lied and to make the playacting be as authentic as possible. The transfer was happening, but McCandless was deleting himself before he could overwrite Alex's consciousness. The deception was necessary in order to throw off Michelette, who was power hungry and wanted to run the company the same way that McCandless did before his revelation, and to decieve anyone else who should not be privileged with such information. Vacendak was the only other person that had access to said information. I hope that makes some sense.

I think that Vacendak has respect for Alex. Sure Alex was a "job", however the fact he kept going, took on anything thrown at him and yeah-saved Vacendak's life, probably made Vacendak think twice about eliminating him. He lightly refers to Alex as a "friend" due to the fact he thinks highly of him. The other guy, Michelette was a greedy prick, squirrely and power hungry. Nothing much to respect there. And I think Vacendak would rather have a decent guy in charge of things instead of Michelette. He seemed genuinely pleased that Alex survived. It reminds me of Diego in "Ice Age". I know, I know apples and oranges but the characters are similar.

Vacendak was payed to hunt him (Alex) down, but probably symphatized with his cause instead of being loyal to the not very likeable rich ruler of that money empire...

Well, lets put forth the facts of Vacenjak's choices:

1) Expose Alex, have him killed then Johnathan Banks' character, who he hated (feeling was mutual), would run the company and might just have him killed

2) Cover for Alex, save his life and, in doing so, gain his trust and friendship and work for him instead of JB's character discussed above

3) Kill both Alex and JB's character and then be on the run from the corporation who, having witnessed him killing both, would hunt him down as the remaining soldiers were loyal to the corporation and whoever was in charge at the time

Choice # 2 looks like the best option, but that is just MHO . . . . . Also, given that he just had a couple of seconds to formulate a plan, took the path of least resistance and figured he would roll with the punches whatever the outcome. Remember, at the end, he reminded RR's character to keep a better eye on Furlong so he doesn't give them all away - the BOSS couldn't drive!

Also take into consideration that Vacendak had called Michelette an a-hole and made no secret of the fact that he detests him, so he most likely wouldn't be employed for a hell of a lot longer with McCandless dead and Michelette in charge.

His only real option was to play along with Alex, since they've both got each other over a barrel - Alex can't sack Vacendak (or even fail to pay him the bounty) without risking Vacendak exposing him, Vacendak can't expose Alex without losing his income from being McCandless Corp's private security.

There's also the grudging respect due to the whole life-saving thing, so he knows Alex is not likely to be a dick.

I'm not sure if Alex was aware that he'd muffed the code and that Vacendak was covering for him - the worried look he had towards the end suggests he probably thought he'd fooled Vacendak.
