McCandless and River Rat Guy Questions

If McCandless was just bits and bytes stored in the database, why is it that his hologram needed to touch the electrodes for the mind transfer?

The River Rat Guy seemed to be cordial to Furlong but later takes part in the attack against him and Vacendak. Julie's bodyguard kills him with his sword before he could do any more damage. I wonder why he turned on Furlong? (Money most likely)

Probably, the river rat guy was part of the team looking for Furlough, but wasn't with his group so when Furlough washed upon the shore, he wanted to appear to be some random bum to avoid confronting him. he probably saw he had his gun and decided to wait until he was in the position where he could outgun him.
