What the hell was up with the ending?

Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention during the movie (I think I walked out of the room a few times) but why did the old guy keep saying "McDonalds" at the end? And he handed Selleck a piece of paper or something. No idea what that was all about.

The father kept saying McDonald not McDonald's like his family (and most viewers) thought. They all thought he wanted to go to McDonalds for food. But what actually happend was he had stock in McDonald/Douglas aircraft from when he was younger and the company was just starting. At the end of the movie he handed his son a piece of paper which turned out to be the stock certificate. If you watch towards the end, the dog has the paper in his mouth and you can see "McDonald" on the certificate.

you are correct, except the company's name is McDonnell Douglas.

Earlier in the movie when Don Ameche went into the former store he once owned, he walked down the steps into the basement and opened a drawer and pulled out an old stock certificate for McDonnell Douglas he bought long ago. It wasn't until the end of the movie when Tom Selleck actually read what was on that piece of paper. Until then, everyone assumed he was saying McDonald's and that the paper was a coupon.

Well the bond was worth $5,000, and later near the end, when they're on the airplane, Tom Selleck says that it would be worth "500 times" what it was worth when he bought it.

So we know it's at least worth $500,000 (half a million). But I don't know a whole lot about stocks or bonds, so it might be more than that.
