The film's missing retort to "You can't handle the truth"

Kaffe did have a reply (from the original stage production).

"You trashed the law! But hey, we understand, you’re permitted. You have a greater responsibility than we can possibly fathom. You provide us with a blanket of freedom. We live in a world that has walls and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns, and nothing is going to stand in your way of doing it. Not Willie Santiago, not Dawson and Downey, not Markinson, not 1,000 armies, not the Uniform Code of Military Justice, and not the Constitution of the United States! That’s the truth isn’t it Colonel? I can handle it."

The adaptation was pretty good but I agree this was missing. Maybe they didn't trust Cruise with it once Nicholson had his say. Cruise couldn't top Nicholson if Nicholson was lying on the ground lol.

To be fair it's made quite clear Kaffee can't directly accuse an officer of wrongdoing; or even suggest he was complicit in the crime D&D are on trial for, least of all a Lt Col who's about to become a General. That's why he needed to trick him into the admission.

Agreed. I like the way it plays out in the film.

That definitely should have been in the movie.

I'm fairly certain that "You can't handle the truth" isn't in the original script.
