It apparently worked for centuries, since he couldn't get out until humans came back long after they'd run away with the leveler. The assumption is that the fairies are more the wiser now, and the humans have learned their lesson.

Yeah cuz the point of the movie is to teach us to respect the environment... if they tied the ending up with a bow, that would be like saying "And now we fixed all the environmental problems of the world!! Yippee!!" lol it is supposed to be our responsibility, that's why they made the movie. "For our children and our children's children."
